Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant provides direct patient care to surgical patients throughout the perioperative period. Assists surgeon during surgical procedures by positioning skin preparation, providing wound exposure, performing tissue dissection, suturing, and other surgical tasks. Being a Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant administers medications and IV treatments as necessary. Participates in discharge planning and counsels patients and caregivers on appropriate post-operative care. Additionally, Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR). Requires Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Staff Nurse - RN - Surgical First Assistant's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Various Shifts Available

     

    Provides family centered healthcare utilizing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to deliver state of the art care to all patients; carries out functions that assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient; practices peri-operative nursing and responsible for independent nursing behaviors of peri-operative assessment and post-operative evaluation of care; documents nursing activities to provide a permanent record, for continuity of care, quality improvement and professional accountability; identifies the patient to ensure the patient, procedure and operative site correspond; ensures completeness of preoperative assessment; assesses the patient’s potential for risk/safety concerns and documents/communicates to appropriate personnel; assesses the patient’s coping mechanism and comfort needs; sets priorities for outcomes based on patient need; identifies nursing activities necessary for expected outcomes; bases patient care decisions on identified patient needs, treatment priorities, and age­ specific considerations; organizes patient care activities into logical sequence; coordinates use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care; utilizes preference cards in planning patient care; coordinates patient care needs with team members and appropriate departments; prepares for and anticipates for physician needs; reviews surgery schedule for next day and ensures that necessary supplies/equipment are available and functioning properly; ensures assigned room is clean, prepared, and stocked appropriately for next day’s procedures; inspects sterile items for contamination before opening; maintains sterility while opening sterile items for procedures; documents flesh sterilization items properly; performs appropriate counts and takes corrective action when incorrect counts occur; utilizes principles of aseptic technique in various situations and initiates corrective action when breaks in sterile technique occur; reports to OR thirty minutes prior to start time to prepare daily surgical cases and demonstrates understanding of time efficient turnover between cases; assists co-workers in completion of assignments; documents and reviews documentation prior to finalization of OR record; provides updates to family during lengthy surgical procedures; ensures that weekly terminal cleaning of assigned room is accomplished; prepares sterile fields close to scheduled procedure time so that room is not open for an extended period of time; wears appropriate personal protective equipment during surgical procedures; maintains blood and body fluid precautions on all patients; disposes of medical waste appropriately; observes filters, chemical indicators and other sterilization parameters to verify sterilization; evaluates patients’ responses to care and documents appropriately; documents evaluation of the ground pat site postoperatively; ensures drainage tubes are patent, connected and positioned for optimal drainage and prevention of stasis; ensures surgical dressing is dry and intact; supports the continuity of care through appropriate communication with other health care team members, especially during transfer/shift reports; demonstrates knowledge and competency of medications delivered to and on the sterile field; adheres to departmental guidelines and knows the role of the perioperative nurse during a hyperthermia code; adheres to AORN guidelines related to sterile and aseptic technique; demonstrates knowledge and competency of patient positioning of the anesthetized patient for all surgical procedures; plans and implements care as required by AORN’ s Perioperative Nursing Data Sets; ability to meet the needs of level one trauma patients; establishes and maintains a surgically clean environment to reduce the potential for infection by applying the principles of the potential for infection by applying the principles of antisepsis, decontamination, disinfection, sanitation, sterilization and environmental monitoring; establishes and maintains a sterile field to reduce potential for infection by teaching and supervising the application of principles of aseptic technique and continual monitoring of the sterile field; demonstrates skill in the following intra-operative nursing behaviors: handling tissue, using instrument, providing exposure, and providing hemostasis; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; adheres to policies, including confidentiality; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the state of Alabama, completion of nationally-recognized RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) program, including NIFA, two years of perioperative nursing experience, possessioin of a current Alabama RN license or current Multi-State RN License in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama. Note: USA Health abides by the NLC requirements and guidelines for the state of Alabama.
