Staff Nurse - RN - Infection Control performs hospital-wide surveillance and data collection as part of an overall infection-control program. Investigates possible incidences of infection and implements remedial action. Being a Staff Nurse - RN - Infection Control works with the infection control committee to establish infection control standards and procedures, and educates staff on how to prevent and control infections. Informs the appropriate state and county organizations of any reportable infections and diseases. Additionally, Staff Nurse - RN - Infection Control typically requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Requires a valid state RN license. May require CIC certification. Staff Nurse - RN - Infection Control's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement.     The RN-Infection Control is for all surveillance, study, and coordination regarding all aspects of hospital functions as related to the prevention of and control of infection.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    1. Integrates surveillance findings into the organization's plan for improvement of practice and patient outcomes.
    2. Reviews, analyzes and applies existing regulations, standards and/or guidelines of applicable professional organizations and governmental agencies.
    3. Recommends new or revised practices or procedures based on currently accepted, evidence based infection prevention and control strategies.
    4. Integrates relevant public health issues into practice.  Is in frequent contact with the Minnesota Department of Health.
    5. Conducts surveillance and investigations by using epidemiologic principles. Uses appropriate statistical techniques to describe the data, calculate rates, and critically evaluate significance of findings.
    6. Uses a systematic approach to surveillance to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies that are consistent with WH's Mission, Vision, and Values.
    7. Serves as an educational resource for infection prevention, infection control and health care epidemiology. Performance improvement: coordinates WH's infection prevention and control improvement activities. Serves on the Infection Control Management team.
    8. Provides data by tracking and trending infections.
    9. Notifies Department Manager or other appropriate manager/supervisor of identified infections. 

    Essential Skills & Experiences:

    1. Minimum 2 years of recent Registered Nurse acute care experience, clinical experience in public health setting, and/or infection prevention and control/epidemiology experience.
    2. Current Minnesota License to practice as a Registered Nurse. An emphasis on infection surveillance and prevention preferred.
    3. Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) required within 24 months of hire date.
    4. Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent desired
