Description

The Spray Applicator will focus on the overall health of the plants within the nursery.  Appling of herbicide and pesticide (insecticide, fungicide, bactericide, miticide, molluscicide).  The crop protection department works synergistically with other departments to help produce healthy plants for sale. 

Tasks and Responsibilities

• The Spray Applicator will be responsible for making timely and effective pesticide application.
• Perform routine monitoring and scouting for pests and diseases, diagnoses crop problems, sprays pesticides, and advises other departments on IPM practices to manage issues.  
• responding to all plant-related problems found by scouts or any other worker in the nursery.  He or she will inspect the plants in the field as well as take samples. 
• Responsible for WPS, OSHA and MDA compliance and record keeping for pesticide applications.
• Maintain/repair/clean application equipment and PPE as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills and Competencies

• Extensive knowledge of plant pests and diseases of ornamentals
• Proven ability to recognize issues affecting yield and quickly identify solutions.
• Ability to lead other skilled horticultural workers.
• Ability to identify efficiencies and resource saving solution.

Requirements

• Degree in plant pathology or Horticulture OR 2 years’ experience in field growing.
• Maryland private pesticide applicator license.
• Basic computer skills - Functional experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Must be able to work six days and overnights when needed to male pesticide applications.
• Must be self-motivated.
• Bilingual communication skills, specifically Spanish preferred but not required.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, organization, and ability to follow-through with tasks.
• Ability to move or lift to 50 lbs.

Must be able to work weekends as appropriate.
