Sous Chef assists the Executive Chef in the daily kitchen operations including menu development, purchasing, inventory, cost control, and sanitation. Oversees the activities of the kitchen staff and monitors food production and presentation. Being a Sous Chef resolves operational issues. Performs quality checks on ingredients and prepared dishes. Additionally, Sous Chef complies with all safety and food sanitation laws and regulations. Supervises, trains, and mentors staff. May require an associate degree in culinary arts or equivalent. Typically reports to an executive chef. The Sous Chef supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Sous Chef typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Eligibility criteria for the J1 Internship/Traineeship program:

    – Enrolled in a post-secondary education in the hospitality industry
    OR
    – Hospitality Degree with at least 1 year of relevant work experience (outside of the USA)
    OR
    – 5 years of relevant professional work experience (outside the USA)

    Previous supervisory role and a culinary training degree preferred. Strong English, French and Spanish communications skills are a plus.

    The ideal candidate must possess superb communication skills along with the ability to lead and provide structure in a team environment with a strong work ethic and adherence to food safety protocol. This position is full-time and hourly based.

    • Ability to interact positively with supervisor, management, coworkers, members, and the public to promote a team effort and maintain a positive and professional approach
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision, accomplish tasks without direct instruction, and problem solve for the best solutions
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
    • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages
    • Actively practice food safety procedures
    • Able to train and motivate team

    • Ability to produce a high volume of work in a timely manner, which is accurate, complete, and of high quality
    • Establish client relationships and ensuring maximum satisfaction
