    POSITION TITLE Research Scientist

BARGAINING UNIT: VSC UP PAT GRADE: 13

    BASIC FUNCTION

We are searching for a researcher who is eager to apply biological and microstructural analysis to Arctic environments. The primary objective of the project is to advance the boundary of characterizing various polar terrains from the microscale and into the nanoscale. Leveraging recent advances in X-ray imaging, we aim to connect physical and biological attributes of terrain state, thereby advancing existing basic research of soil, snow, and ice microstructure. By reaching nanoscale resolution, we can achieve the critical application of locating and imaging microbes in situ using X-ray computed tomography. Combined with analyzing critical features of the terrain, we will be able to significantly improve our understanding of microbially-mediated processes in cold regions.

The ultimate goal of the project is to better understand how microbes relate to their microenvironments. The successful applicant will join the team in field expeditions to Greenland, Alaska, and Canada to collect permafrost, sea ice, and snow samples. We seek to obtain the first in-situ characterization of microbes in natural polar environments, alongside quantifying the details of the dynamic pore structure. This study progresses our knowledge of basic biological processes impacting Arctic terrain, the influence of increased freeze-thaw cycles on microbial communities, and our ability to predict microbial community behavior in a changing climate.

This position will be required to meet additional obligations to comply with federal contractor regulations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Help organize and lead field campaigns to research sites in Greenland, Alaska, and Canada

    • Collect permafrost cores, snow samples, and sea ice cores

    • Develop protocols for imaging microbes using X-ray computed tomography

    • Identify and characterize bacteria and fungi in permafrost samples using q-PCR or dd-pCR analysis

    • Analyze, interpret, and document research findings for review

    • Coordinate original research projects related to the project goals

    • Help mentor undergraduate research assistants

    • Write scientific papers for publication and present results at conferences
