RESEARCH SCIENTIST - SCIENTIST - Spaceflight Hardware Research - Durham, New Hampshire

  • Who We Are:

    SwRI-EOS (on UNH campus in Durham, NH) offers exciting spaceflight hardware opportunities. We design and fabricate spaceflight hardware, including new instrumentation and custom- designed avionics. Active programs include missions in space weather, heliophysics, astrophysics and Earth science.

    Objectives of this Role:
    • Participate in the full life cycle design (from concept to hardware) for flight hardware in high reliability systems for space applications, contributing to assembly and testing activities under the supervision and mentorship of senior personnel.
    • Work effectively with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to develop a detailed list of requirements and to ensure that the designs meet those requirements, participating in design reviews as needed.
    • Support spaceflight instrument test activities, including test setup, data acquisition, and data analysis, as needed, to support the design, fabrication, assembly, and test of spacecraft components and space sensors.
    • Support quality assurance (ISO 9001) activities, including parts inventory management and configuration management support (documentation, manufacturing planning sheet preparation and revision support).
    • Receiving inspection of parts and assemblies (non-flight hardware only) as directed by management and coordinated with Quality Engineering staff.
    Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
    • Work with more senior SwRI engineering staff (both in NH and San Antonio) in the assembly and test of spaceflight electronics boards, sensors, spacecraft structures, and electro-mechanical devices.
    • Conduct research, develop testing methodologies, and support assembly of space flight hardware, participating in the necessary reviews.
    • Conduct Controlled stores duties per SwRI’s procedures including issuing flight parts to flight Manufacturing Planning Sheets and conducting periodic inventory audits.
    • Coordinate calibration activities for UNH and SwRI equipment according to SwRI calibration processes and maintain certification of ESD benches, clean rooms and vacuum chambers per SwRI procedures.
    • Support senior scientists in the analysis of data from scientific experiments.
    Requirements:
    • Requires a Bachelors in Physics, Engineering Physics in a Physics program, or directly related field
    • 0-5 years: Experience in laboratory data acquisition and data analysis.
    • 0-5 years: Hands-on laboratory experience with mechanical systems, mechanisms, electronics, electro-mechanical systems, test instrumentation, measurement instrumentation, vacuum systems, and/or clean rooms.
    • 0-5 years: Experience in working with space hardware under an established quality management system (such as ISO 9001).
    • A valid/clear driver's license is required
    Special Requirements:

    Work assignment is in Durham, New Hampshire. Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
