Applies a wide range concepts, practices, and procedures from two or more specialized fields of science, such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, or agriculture. Being a Soil Scientist may require a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or a related field with at least 5 years of work experience. May direct the work of a small group of employees. Additionally, Soil Scientist relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager and may be considered the lead for a specific area or unit.     Description of Work

    The Division of Soil and Water Conservation (Division) administers a comprehensive statewide program for conserving the state's soil and water resources. The Division serves as staff to the N.C. Soil and Water Conservation Commission (Commission), and assists the 96 local Soil and Water Conservation District (Districts), composed of 492 appointed and elected officials and their State Association known as the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. The Division is staffed by 44 employees, and is divided into three (3) program areas - District Operations, Nonpoint Source Section and the Technical Services Section.

    The Soil Scientist serves as a technical expert in soil properties and classification. The position provides basic soil interpretive services to promote the proper use of soil resources. Through the position, assistance is provided to address the natural resource conservation management objectives of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Division programs such as AgWRAP, NCACSP, and the CCAP. The position also provides technical assistance to the Natural Resources Conservation Service field offices and other local state and federal agencies, upon request.

    This position is located at 216 W. Jones St, Raleigh, NC and serves the following counties: Alamance, Bertie, Cabarrus, Camden, Caswell, Chatham, Chowan, Currituck, Davidson, Davie, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Johnston, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, Northampton, Orange, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Stokes, Vance, Wake, and Warren.

    Travel is required and a state-owned vehicle will be provided to support everyday job responsibilities.

    • Knowledge of Soil mapping and classification criteria applied in the characterization of soils.
    • Knowledge of the physical characteristics of soils, their classification under the Unified Soil Classification System, and their probable implications regarding desired conservation practices.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
    • Knowledge and experience delineating wetlands.
    • Recognize potentially unsafe conditions in soil test pits and trenches and to take responsibility for communicating these hazards to clients, contractors, local county employees and fellow staff members.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.

    Bachelor's degree in soil science, agronomy, or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in soil science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
