Additionally, Soil Conservationist may direct the work of a small group of employees. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.     JOB TITLE:   

    Assistant Professor of Soil Science

    JOB PURPOSE:   

    Develop research and teaching programs in Soil Science, with a particular focus on land reclamation.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

    The successful candidate will join faculty in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management (ESM) within the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Natural Resources (CALSNR), receive a joint appointment with the School of Energy Resources (SER) and serve as a SER Assistant Professor of Soil Science. The nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor is expected to develop an externally funded research program on the soil aspects of land reclamation. In addition, the new hire is expected to teach the Reclamation of Drastically Disturbed Lands course and two additional Soil Science courses. This position bridges SER’s mission of promoting energy development for the economic benefit of Wyoming and CALSNR’s mission to promote the sustainability of agriculture, environment, and natural resources.

    SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:  

    This position will also bridge energy-related research with the CALSNR mission to promote the sustainability of agriculture, the environment, and natural resources through the application of the land grant principles of learning, engagement, and discovery.

    COMPETENCIES:  

    Standard expectations for UW faculty include development of a successful research and teaching program as well as performance of appropriate service activities within the University, the State, and the faculty’s professional field. As a SER Assistant Professor of Soil Science, the new faculty member will receive annual funds from SER to support research, graduate students, and/or travel relevant to the position. This funding will initially be available for three years and can be renewed upon successful performance. The candidate will join colleagues in ESM who integrate rangeland ecology, watershed management, soil science, and entomology. ESM values a team that represents diverse backgrounds and experiences. Soil conservation and reclamation are critical issues, and we need scientists from different backgrounds to develop novel solutions to support communities in the face of change.

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

    This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Ph.D. in Soil Science or a closely related area
    • Evidence of research productivity in the form of peer-reviewed journal publications

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Research experience related to land reclamation
    • Evidence of teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels
    • Evidence of success at obtaining research funding
    • Evidence of mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research
    • Postdoctoral experience.
