Ship Engineer repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel engines in boats, such as yachts, tugs, and trawlers, following specifications. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with 2-4 years of experience in the field. Being a Ship Engineer is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Additionally, Ship Engineer performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Hutco Branch: Portsmouth, VA
Rate of Pay: $23.00 to 27.00 per hour ( per diem available for those who qualify)
DESCRIPTION:
We are currently looking for good shipfitters who have 2 to 3 years’ experience in the shipyard. You have to be prompt and have reliable transportation. You must be knowledgeable in layouts or plates, pipes, and structural shapes, including flat layouts and complex layouts involving projection and compound angles.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to obtain a government facility security pass (DBIDS)
- Must have standard tools for a ship fitting.
- Able to work different shifts.
- Must have good knowledge of shipboard spaces.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must have knowledge of WAFs.
- OSHA 10 Maritime & Firewatch Training
- Must be able to pass a seven-year background check w/ No Felonies
- Must pass drug test and E-Verify.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Hard Hat, Steel Toe Safety Boots, Safety Glasses, Gloves
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Be capable of assembling foundation, deck houses, and specialized structures for all areas of the ship
- Must know the guidelines of 5S and be aware of the standard items
- Have knowledge of ship related nomenclature and able to locate structures in relationship to frames, longitudinal stringers, centerlines etc.
- Must know weld symbols and how they apply to material preparation for welding
- Must have skills to include tack welding, burning, use of various power tools such as shears, saws, presses, etc.
- Be capable of making templates as needed for fabrications and or installation of ship structures
