Security Specialist administers, coordinates, and evaluates security programs that support the strategy, policies, and standards established for the physical safety of all visitors, employees, or customers to the organization's facilities and the security of property and assets. Compiles data and analyzes results of audits, inspections, daily logs, and incident reports to assess security vulnerabilities, measure program effectiveness, and identify the need for additional resources. Being a Security Specialist coordinates any required security clearance processing or investigative research for employees or job candidates with applicable entities. Assists with the development of training, education programs, and communications on security policies and topics to ensure staff is prepared for potential security issues, crisis response, disaster recovery, evacuation, workplace violence, and other emergency events. Additionally, Security Specialist monitors communications and stays informed about local, state, provincial, or federal security-related information, directives, and events. May coordinate or assist with investigations and critical event responses in coordination with law enforcement and other officials. Understands law enforcement methods, tactics, and procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Security Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Qualifications

    Minimum

    A baccalaureate degree in accounting, business, finance, engineering, architecture, construction management, or similar fields plus one (1) year of experience in a similar field.

    Substitutions

    Six years of full-time work experience in any field may be substituted for the required baccalaureate degree only.

    A master's degree in a qualifying field may be substituted for the required experience.

    NOTE : Qualifying master's degree include, accounting, business administration, finance, management, economics, quantitative business analysis, public administration, information systems and decision sciences or management information systems.

    Candidates without a baccalaureate degree may combine work experience and college credit to qualify as follows :

    A maximum of 90 semester hours can be combined with experience to qualify.

    15 to 29 semester hours credit will substitute for one year of experience.

    30 to 44 semester hours credit will substitute for two years of experience.

    45 to 59 semester hours credit will substitute for three years of experience.

    60 to 74 semester hours credit will substitute for four years of experience.

    75 to 89 semester hours credit will substitute for five years of experience.

    90 or more semester hours credit will substitute for six years of experience.

    College credit earned without obtaining a baccalaureate degree can be substituted for a maximum of six years full-time work experience.

    Candidates with 90 or more semester hours of credit, but without a degree must also have at least two years full-time work experience to qualify.

    • NOTE : Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies : the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools;
    • the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Incorporated; the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools;

    Preference may also be given to applicants with a background in construction management, project management, civil engineering, and / or an accounting background with an extensive knowledge of reconciling large budgets.

    Applicants must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; effective oral / written communication skills; strong analytical skills;

    the ability to work independently, and effective interpersonal skills. This position requires the ability to travel and attend out-of-town meetings and may require overnight travel and overtime.

    The position may be deployed statewide with short notice. Must be able to work 12-hour shifts and beyond, day or night, for extended periods during emergencies.

    Provides guidance, oversight, and general assistance to applicants in preparing documentation and information to expedite closeout for federally funded grants awarded through HMA programs.

    Monitors the projects of each assigned applicant, and closes projects in a timely manner.

    Seeks resolution to short and long term problems affecting efficient closeout for HMA grants.

    Coordinates and / or works with applicants to gather / compile information and / or documentation to request closeouts.

    Composes internal and external correspondence.

    Advises higher level management on all situations as needed.

    The person selected for this position will be trained on the technical aspects of program and will be expected to exercise independent judgment in managing projects and advising applicants, within the limits of applicable Federal and State statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
