The Information Sciences Group (CCS-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking technical experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence to join our vibrant and multidisciplinary research team. Applicants should be established research scientists in the fields of Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, with a sound understanding of the underlying mathematics and algorithms used in these systems. Our mission is to develop and deliver novel AI algorithms, including foundation models, for extreme-scale scientific challenges.

    The successful candidate will participate in research activities to develop AI techniques, such as foundation models, for a variety of projects related to scientific discovery and national security. Responsibilities will include participating in R&D activities/projects related to AI-enabled extreme-scale scientific simulations, self-driving laboratory experiments, science-informed machine learning, predictive analysis, and other applied-research activities. Code development will be a core activity of the position, as will writing research results and publishing in high-quality venues.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Established expertise in the mathematics and algorithmic underpinnings for artificial intelligence, machine learning, or uncertainty quantification as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.
    • Demonstrated experience of strong programming skills using high-level languages such as Python.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a technically diverse team.
    • Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by publications and cover letter.


    Education/Experience: Positions requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience with AI for science, foundation models, transformer architectures, science-informed machine learning, surrogate modeling, digital twins, inverse problems, or uncertainty quantification.
    • Experience with high-performance computing, GPU programming, parallel programming, cloud computing, and related paradigms.
    • Experience with modern machine-learning libraries and tools, especially for training and deploying foundation models.
    • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

    Work Location:

    This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

    Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
