TITLE: School Nurse
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Provide support to learning by promoting the health, well-being, and safety of students and staff. Work collaboratively with school and district staff and community professionals to meet health care needs of student in school setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate degree in nursing (Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred)

Current Arizona Registered Nurse (RN) License
-
DPS IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
-
Two (2) years clinical experience (pediatrics preferred)

Valid Arizona Driver’s License in order to transport students if necessary
-
Registered as a Medicaid provider (may apply when hired)

Obtain and maintain NCI and CPR certification
-
Knowledge of Immunization requirements according to Arizona State Law
-
Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations
-
Ability to work autonomously, making sound decisions while under pressure in a variety of situations
-
Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with students, parents/guardians, staff and outside agencies
-
Proficient in the use of a computer and basic software applications
-
Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff
-
Good knowledge of the procedures, practices, materials, and equipment required to provide appropriate learning experiences for students to whom assigned

Ability to control certain behavior(s) through physical restraint
-
Ability to lift and transfer students up to 50 lbs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate Health Services program within the assigned school.

Provide direct nursing care by administering first aid, emergency care, medication administration and specialized medical procedures to ill and/or medically fragile students, and students with mental health needs according to district policies and protocols.

Provide pediatric nursing procedures such as catheterization, tracheotomy care, suctioning, gastrostomy feedings, chest percussion and ventilators.

Train principal designees to administer medications, procedures, and emergency treatments and procedures as appropriate.

Assist student safety, abuse, and health related issues, identifying problems, referring as appropriate and complying with legal requirements.

Document accurately.

Follow Arizona State Laws, district policies and protocols related to communicable disease, immunizations, mandated hearing and vision screening and child abuse. Refer as appropriate. Submit required reports.

Supervise and administer mandated vision and hearing screenings, referrals and assistance with follow-up care. Submit required reports.

Provide education and training related to acute and chronic illness and health related topics. Act as a resource for students, parents/guardians and staff.

Develop individualized care plans and emergency plans for students with health care needs, maintaining contact with staff, parents/guardians and/or medical providers to implement health care directions and notify of changes in student health in the school setting.

Identify health problems referring to medical provider for follow up treatment as appropriate.

Participate in a variety of meetings (MET, IEP) related to students.

Attend staff meetings, health service meetings, staff development and other required meetings as assigned.

Maintain Medicaid documentation and submit monthly.

Identify health and safety concerns in school environment and promote a nurturing school environment.

Serve as a health care resource to staff and administrators.
-
Participate on the Crisis Team when needed.

Participate in Random Moment Study.

Provide first aid and health counseling for staff, documenting according to district policy.

Maintain confidential student health information and records.
-
Maintain health office, supplies and equipment.
-
Transport students in emergency situations.
-
May supervise and train health assistant(s).

Perform other duties as assigned.
