Safety Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Being a Safety Specialist ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. Additionally, Safety Specialist may have additional responsibility for fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, or other safety related activities depending on the industry and location. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Safety Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.   • Assists the Manager of Maintenance & Construction of Plant Operations in developing safety programs and conducting safety training, safety equipment inspection and evaluation, safety surveys and inspections. Respond to emergencies, assists in conducting safety and emergency training exercises. Inspect, monitor and report safety compliance for facilities, and facility modification sites as directed. Monitor the Clinics' air quality as directed. Maintain compliance with safety standards and regulations as applicable. Perform accident and hazard report investigation and follow-up as applicable. Coordinate and conduct emergency response drills as applicable. Ensure adherence to UNMCCC and departmental policies and procedures. Leads and directs life Safety, Safety, Environment of Care, Biosafety, and Radiation Safety segments of Plant Operations Department scope. Monitors and evaluates the facility safety program for efficiency and compliance with required inspection frequencies to minimize negative impacts to budget, services, and patient safety. Analyzes trends and makes recommendations for improvement.

    Oversees the safety operations of the department, ensuring adherence to organization policies and procedures, while ensuring alignment to enterprise goals and compliance with applicable accreditation standards (Joint Commission, etc.), laws, and regulations. Develops and implements processes, procedures, and systems to ensure adequate documentation and maintenance of records, reports, and validation of workflow for compliance with TJC Environment of Care, life Safety, and Emergency Management standards. Participates in capital construction project management processes, conducts Interim life Safety Measure (ILSM) and Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA) processes. Conducts periodic reviews of contractor safety programs and site visits to ensure adherence and compliance with OSHA safety regulations. Supervises personnel, including internal and external resources, coordinates and schedules work with multiple groups of stakeholders, develops and implements organization wide staff training programs and professional development, evaluates program/stakeholder performance and makes recommendations for improvement.

    Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    PROGRAMS - Assist in the collection, summarize and distribute performance indicator data for Environment of Care programs.

    COORDINATE - Assist in developing and coordinate implementation of safety recommendations.

    WASTE MANAGEMENT - Assist the Director of Environmental Services with Hazardous Waste Management.

    REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS - Maintain knowledge and keep up to date with regulations and standards including but not limited to OSHA regulations, DOT and EPA storage handling, use and disposal of hazardous and infections waste, PHMSA compressed gas regulations, NIOSH Respiratory Protection regulations and NFPA standards related to fire protection systems, emergency management, fire extinguishers training and inspection, The Joint Commissions (TJC), and other regulatory agencies as applicable.  

    MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION - Perform Life Safety systems recurring maintenance and inspections; plan, prioritize and oversee repairs, renovation, and new construction minimizing disruption of operations; make various inspections.

    DRAWINGS - The ability to understand Life Safety drawings.

    SYSTEMS - Have knowledge of the Fire alarm and Sprinkler system.

    INSPECTION - Ability to inspect the physical environment of the clinic and ensure the buildings compliance with the Life Safety Drawings.

    RESPONSE - Respond to emergencies, hazardous materials spills, fires, floods, outages and conduct emergency training exercises as applicable.  

    DATA ENTRY - Maintain consolidated hazardous chemicals database and ensure Safety Data Sheets are entered into the online repository as applicable.  

    RESPONSE - Coordinate, conduct, and document emergency response and fire drills as applicable.  

    INVESTIGATION - Assist in investigations of medical device safety incidents; prepare defective device reports; follow up on corrective actions; maintain report database and files.  

    REPORTS - Understand accident reports and hazard reports; gather, compile and analyze data and make recommendations.

    INSPECTION - Inspect facilities, new construction and modification sites and safety equipment according to hazard surveillance schedules for compliance with safety OSHA, DOT, EPA, TJC, NFPA, State and Hospitals standards and regulations; prepare, maintain written recommendations, reports; perform follow-up review on findings.

    PLANNING AND COORDINATION - Assist in planning and coordination of special projects, events and programs as required.

    TRAINING - Develop and conduct safety training.

    MEETINGS - Attend meetings and represent department as applicable.  

    ESCORT - Escort outside agencies on safety related tours, inspections, services, etc…

    DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops as appropriate.  

    POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established Safety policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.

    RECORDS AND REPORTING - Create and maintain all required Safety and Hazardous Waste reports, records, etc…

    The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.
