SAFETY MANAGER plans and manages the general health, safety, and loss control policies and procedures of the organization. Monitors and evaluates the workplace to ensure compliance with governmental regulatory agencies. Being a SAFETY MANAGER designs and directs safety training programs to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Develops worker plans and policies for new employee safety orientation including skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Additionally, SAFETY MANAGER studies, identifies, and reports causes of past accidents and develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrences. Requires a bachelor's degree of occupational safety and health or related degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The SAFETY MANAGER manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes.     Job Description

    The Hazardous Materials Manager reports to the Executive Director of the Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability Department (EHSS).  This position is responsible for the University’s chemical safety, research safety, hazard communication and hazardous materials programs and may include other duties as assigned. Key responsibilities include: 

    • Manages laboratory and makerspace safety, chemical hygiene, hazard communication, and hazardous materials 
    • Leads efforts in chemical inventory, labeling and storage, material disposal, and hazmat spill preparedness and response 
    • Conducts routine and follow-up laboratory and makerspace consultations and ensures proper operation of ventilation, eyewashes, safety showers, and other emergency equipment 
    • Manages EHSS waste disposal facility infrastructure, supplies, and disposal 
    • Provides technical expertise to the university on chemicals and regulated wastes 
    • Supervision of staff to include both training and mentoring 
    • Fosters positive relationships with stakeholders and colleagues and supports a positive safety culture 

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biological sciences, environmental science/engineering or similar field
    • At least three (3) years of experience comparable to the duties specified or an equivalent combination of training and experience

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering 
    • Five (5) or more years in chemical and laboratory safety experience
    • Experience overseeing hazardous waste storage facilities 
    • Experience at an institute of higher education
    • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) 

    Special Requirements

    • Ability to wear an air-purifying respirator, transport drums weighing up to 450 pounds using a drum hand truck
    • Currently possess a valid driver’s license
    • Able to respond to after-hours emergencies

    Additional Information

Salary will be between $65,000 and $75,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience.
