Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Our Claims department oversees both high-exposure workers' compensation and liability claims. As an unbundled carrier, we work actively with third-party administrators (TPAs) and self-administered accounts to assist in guiding claims to a successful resolution. As an excess and large deductible carrier, the high exposure claims we handle keep our group challenged, but the uniqueness provides plenty of growth opportunities.

    Role Description:

    In the role of Managing Director Liability Claims, you will be responsible for handling assigned claims from initial assignment to closure as well as supervising Claims Analyst(s) and Claims Manager(s) handling Liability claims. You will also provide assistance in various administrative functions associated with the Liability Line of Business (LOB), and will liaison with Client Engagement, Underwriting, Risk Control, Reinsurance, TPA Partnerships and Finance departments, as needed while reporting to the Vice President, Casualty Claims.

    Your day-to-day responsibilities as Managing Director Liability Claims will include:

    • Directly or indirectly negotiating claim settlements with oversight of direct reports within established authority levels.
    • Coordinating litigation management efforts on claims to include selection of counsel when appropriate, and the monitoring of counsel performance in accordance with department litigation guidelines.
    • Identifying claims with reinsurance and provide initial and subsequent updates according to department procedures.
    • Communicating with Underwriting, Risk Control, Finance, and Client Engagement departments regarding account service issues, large losses and specific TPA issues and/or concerns, when appropriate.
    • Being responsible for the quality of work performed by Claims Analyst(s) and Claims Manager(s) who directly report to you, completing quarterly desk audits and reviewing closed claims.
    • Monitoring mediation and trial exposures and the administration, supervision and oversight of appropriate settlement authority across the Liability LOB in line with the established guidelines.
    • Monitoring the performance and completion of annual performance appraisals for direct reports, managing the hiring and onboarding/training of new Claims Analyst(s) and Claims Manager(s) as well as coordinating on-going training of direct reports.

    Qualifications:

    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree for accredited college or university required.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Seven to ten years' experience in Liability claims adjusting and litigation management with a primary insurance carrier; experience adjusting Commercial Auto and General Liability Claims.
    • Experience analyzing coverage issues and drafting reservation of rights and coverage letters required.
    • Must have strong organizational and analytical skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Supervisory experience is required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience adjusting Public Entity, Cyber, Excess, Umbrella and Construction Liability Claims.
    • Experience adjusting claims in multiple jurisdictions a plus.

It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will consider the candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
