Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) seeks a dynamic Executive Director to build on the organization’s exceptional record of advocating for safe, healthy workplaces since 1976. MassCOSH’s mission is to ensure that all workers can go to work and return home with their health and well-being intact.

    MassCOSH has a special focus on workers who are under-represented and often in harm’s way: immigrants, youth, low wage earners, workers of color, emergency response and hazardous waste workers and families of fallen workers. We actively collaborate with allies who are at the heart of our mission: unions and labor organizations, occupational health professionals, lawyers, community and faith groups and students and staff in public schools.

    The incoming Executive Director will provide effective and visionary leadership that actively engages board, staff and volunteers in implementing the organization’s strategic plan and maximizing the organization’s impact. Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing operations including finance, human resources, program development and fundraising.

    This is primarily an in-person position with flexibility around working from home a few days per week.

    Working closely with the board and staff, the Executive Director will be responsible for:

    Fundraising & Grants Management:

    -Provide leadership in developing a diverse and comprehensive fundraising strategy, raising at least $1M annually.

    -Oversee management of grants and government contracts, including researching, identifying and writing grant proposals, which currently fund approximately 85% of the organization’s budget, as well as reporting and invoicing, in collaboration with staff program directors.

    -Support Development & Communications Coordinator in organizing annual union membership drive, individual giving program (including sustaining giving program), and annual fundraising event and annual meeting which raise approximately 15% of the organization’s budget.

    Financial Management: Oversee relationship with Your Part-Time Comptroller (YPTC) and work closely with the Operations & Administrative Coordinator to effectuate internal financial management systems and controls to:

    -Ensure timely completion of annual financial audits and 990 Tax Forms.

    -Generate budgets and financial reports for as requested by the board, staff program directors, and funders.

    Governance & Human Resources Leadership:

    -Create and sustain a workplace that models MassCOSH’s commitment to a healthy work environment for all workers.

    -Create and sustain an organizational culture of transparency and inclusivity, which builds on the strengths and assets of the staff, board, and volunteers.

    -Represent the organization’s management, with support from the Board of Directors, in bargaining with the staff union.

    -Establish effective supervision strategies that facilitate open communication and collaboration between staff and management, including the structure and format of annual performance reviews for the staff of 5-10 full-time and part-time members. During the summer, the organization employs 20-30 teens in the Teens Lead at Work program.

    -Build the capacity of the Board of Directors, which includes representatives of the Immigrant Worker Center and the Teens Lead at Work program, by identifying potential new members, engaging the existing Board and creating opportunities to work with/support staff and volunteers.

    -Ensure compliance with federal, state and local workplace regulations and grant requirements.

    Supporting Program Development:

    -Provide leadership in developing and implementing a strategic plan to ensure that organizational priorities align with the organization's core mission and values.

    -Stay abreast of worker health and safety trends and/or policies to build effective coalitions and increase engagement of workers, unions and other stakeholders.

    Core Qualifications

    -7-10 years of nonprofit leadership and fundraising experience.

    -Experience with public health, employment law, occupational safety and health, and/or other similar areas.

    -Experience managing highly motivated and engaged staff and facilitating their professional development.

    -A demonstrated commitment to build the social justice movement with community-based coalitions.

    -Proven experience developing and/or maintaining sound financial practices and controls.

    -Experience and insight into strategies for developing strong and effective public policies.

    -Ability to maintain and manage multiple funding contracts and policies within the organization’s mission and scope of work.

    -Strong written and oral communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

    -Ability to effectively lead an organization through unexpected and challenging transitions.

    -Strong public relations experience, with the ability to engage a range of core stakeholders and cultures, including labor, environmental, and community organizations.

    -Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.

    -Ability to speak other languages is a valuable asset.
