Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Would you like to:
    • Provide strategic leadership and supervision of all Department personnel
    • Oversee the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws to maintain peace and order within the community
    • Collaborate closely with emergency response teams to provide timely and efficient support services while prioritizing the safety and well-being of individuals in need
    • Develop the annual departmental budget which is approximately $750,000 and monitors and authorize expenditures in accordance with approved budget
    • Manage the city’s jail facility and will work with City Administration on the potential for an upgraded and/or new Public Safety Facility
    • Conduct crime prevention programs and investigations as necessary
    • Maintain and/or supervise all department records, including agency criminal and noncriminal records in accordance with city, state, and federal records retention policies
    • Participate in public relations efforts such as assisting with community events, parades, and activities
    • Stay current with professional Public Safety best practices, and procedures. Ensure departmental personnel understanding and compliance with same
    • Make recommendations to the Administration and City Council regarding changes in municipal ordinances for the Department
    • Represent the City in matters regarding law enforcement and public safety matters. Make public presentations, provides testimony, and regularly interfaces with the community’s elected officials and public on these matters
    • Participate in training and implementation of the Incident Command System
    You need:
    • Minimum 6 years in law enforcement and public safety, with three years in a supervisory role, preferably sergeant rank or above
    • Graduate of an accredited police academy
    • Advanced Certificate from Alaska Police Standards Council or ability to obtain within 10 months of hire. (Out of state officers must attend a recertification academy in Alaska)
    • The ability to demonstrate ethical effective decision-making and ability to engage with community stakeholders, addressing public safety concerns and promote community policing initiatives.
