Risk Management Director manages and administers an organization's risk-management programs. Implements policies, procedures, and controls to monitor and minimize the risk exposure of assets. Being a Risk Management Director researches internal and external risk factors including economic, market, and regulatory risks that may affect the organization. Routinely evaluates the effectiveness of procedures and collaborates with internal stakeholders to monitor changes in the business environment. Additionally, Risk Management Director manages statistical analysis and designing of financial models to predict the risk exposure of an organization's assets. Reviews risk analysis reports to ensure risks are identified and managed effectively. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Risk Management Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Risk Management Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Director of Risk Management

  • The Director of Risk Management focuses on employee safety and risk management to promote a culture of safety with town operations. The role develops and administers risk assessments, conducts audits and leads training programs to comply with safety legislation and industry best practices. The role also Investigates any incidences that may result in employee injury or asset loss.Duties include, but are not limited to:
    1. Encourages a safety culture by coaching and directing safety activities and training programming for each department.
    2. Conducts job hazard assessments for each role within all departments and ensures employee best safety practices and compliance with employee PPE requirements and environmental and worksite safety.
    3. Examines, audits, and evaluates work activities to ensure safety best practices for each department.
    4. Maintains current knowledge of associated laws, polices, regulations and guidelines, regarding OSHA standards, workplace safety best practices and related requirements.
    5. Audits and inspects safety of buildings and vehicles to reduce hazards, accidents and losses and reports conditions that need review to department heads.
    6.  Serves as a member of all crash and related department committees.
    7. Ensures safety materials are posted at all locations, assess required training needs for individual roles and ensures that all required safety training is documented and filed.
    8. Serves as the liaison to insurance broker and carriers for workers ‘compensation, general liability, loss control, property insurance, contract insurance requirements and other related insurance programs; to coordinate Risk Management activities with department heads.
    9. Provides highly responsible and complex reporting and subject matter expertise staff assistance to executive management.
    10. Workers closely with HR for work related injury reviews, worker’s compensation coordination and related.
    11. Analyze loss data and prioritize actions as a part of the Town Safety program.
    12. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with department heads and staff.
    13. Keeps the Assistant Town Manager of Admin Support and Town Manager informed on any priority safety related issue.
    14. Completes administrative duties to include attending meetings, reviewing reports, completing various reports, participating in budget planning and reviews, approving invoices, answering inquiries, etc., as needed. 

    Supervisory Responsibilities: This position will supervise those employees in the risk management division.

    Education and/or Experience:Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.S.) from a four-year college or university or equivalent; in Business, Risk Management, Safety or related and four years related risk management and safety experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Master’s degree desired. Previous experience in a safety role is required. 


    Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

    • An expert level of understanding OSHA, comprehensive risk management programs and workplace safety guidelines
    • Extensive understanding employee personal protective equipment and work duty hazard assessments.
    • The ability to understand, explain, and apply ordinances, state statues, federal worker safety laws and other employee safety regulations is required.
    • Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences in a meaningful and understandable manner is required.
    • Extensive understanding of liability insurance, loss control and workers compensation knowledge required.
    • Excellent project management skills and ability to contribute as part of a project team.
    • Computer software skills consist of Microsoft Office suite including understanding of Excel and other financial software programs required. 
    • The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.
    • The ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocols and guidelines is required.
    • The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationship with residents, vendors and other Town departments is required.
    • The ability to resolve conflicts between employees and between employees and residents is required.
    • The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
    • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
    • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

    While the offices of the Town of Plainfield are usually open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive a Town vehicles. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
