Retail Store Manager - Museum plans and directs the day-to-day operations of a retail store within a museum. Develops strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales, and increase profitability. Being a Retail Store Manager - Museum ensures customer needs are met, complaints are resolved, and service is quick and efficient. Ensures all products and displays are merchandised effectively to maximize sales and profitability. Additionally, Retail Store Manager - Museum forecasts staffing needs and develops a recruiting strategy to provide optimal staffing in all areas. May require a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Lead and directs the work of others. Typically reports to Retail Store Manager, Sr. The Retail Store Manager - Museum supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. Thorough knowledge of department processes.     Join our team at the American Swedish Institute as the Museum Store Manager. ASI is a museum and a beloved 95-year-old cultural institution, a gathering place for all people to share experiences around themes of culture, migration, the environment, and the arts.  

    Our shop is a go-to stop, in-person and online, for Nordic crafts, gifts, and designed objects.  

    In this position, you’ll be the manager who sets the strategy and vision for our museum store. You’ll build strong relationships with a staff team to create a friendly, welcoming environment for colleagues and shoppers alike. You’ll collaborate with ASI staff on creative direction and contribute to growing our audience by developing a unique and compelling shopping experience. In the store, you’ll oversee operations, track sales data, and help to build strategies for revenue. 

    Hours and Classification: Full-time, exempt, salaried, benefit eligible position

    Supervises a team of retail staff

    Rate: $67,00-$72,000/annually

    Requirements

    In this role you’ll get to:

    • Set vision and strategy for purchasing, product development, e-commerce initiatives, inventory control, and staff collaboration.  
    • Create a welcoming and collaborative retail team that reflects ASI’s values of stewardship, hospitality, learning, difference, innovation, and sustainability.  
    • Ensure productivity and a level of customer service reflective of ASI's mission, vision, and values. 
    • Manage store operations including production and adherence to budgets, development of sales plans, purchasing and pricing strategy.  
    • Collaborate with ASI staff, manufacturers, designers, and outside vendors to develop / purchase products that reflect ASI’s unique aesthetic, align with exhibitions, programs, the ASI brand, and events suitable for retail.  
    • Create and maintain a contemporary Scandi-forward store appearance and display strategy that is unique to ASI and differentiates us in the marketplace. 
    • Lead an active e-commerce presence that coordinates with and complements the on-site store.  

    This job might be for you if you have:

    • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of successful retail management experience. 
    • A collaborative, respectful attitude that creates a positive, energetic work environment.
    • A strong visual sense. 
    • High energy and ability to handle successful, busy days and holiday season. 
    • Initiative. You are a self-starter willing to work hands-on; able to handle multiple responsibilities and demands with a high level of decorum and patience. 
    • The ability to solicit feedback, listen to differing points of view, and work through creative collaborative solutions. 
    • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills necessary for working with many constituents including museum staff, volunteers, trustees, vendors, corporate clients and the public. 
    • Experience with Microsoft 365, point-of-sale (POS) software and preferably e-commerce systems. 
    • Physical ability to stand bend, reach, and lift - 20 pounds often, and occasionally up to 40 pounds. Ability to use a ladder occasionally for store merchandising. 
    • Ability to work some evenings and weekend hours required.
