    The Department of Performance, Play & Design (PPD) is a multi-disciplinary, academic unit of the University of California Santa Cruz. It houses three degree-granting programs in Theater Arts, Dance, and Games & Playable Media. As part of the curriculum, the Department supports productions of plays, dance concerts, and other performances and installations.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general direction of the Department Manager, the PPD Operations & Facilities Manager administers the production, equipment, and facilities budgets, oversees facilities and all technical aspects of PPD's curricular needs. The Operations & Facilities Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and execution of policy, as determined by the Department Chair, for space use, budget, equipment and technical services. The position analyzes and develops proposals for future needs in these areas, provides direct supervision to four operations staff employees, and in general oversees the daily operations of PPD facilities. The position is also responsible for making sure the operations staff is fully in alignment with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) mandates of the Department's commitment to racial justice, gender justice, equal opportunity for all, and decolonization.

    Salary Information: Salary Range: $61,800 - $85,900 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES

    25% - Leadership
    • Supervise Operations Staff (Production Manager, Costume Shop Manager, Technical Director, Technology Supervisor). Design job descriptions, schedule and conduct interviews, hire staff employees in consultation with the Department Manager per Arts HR standards. Coordinate training of staff and student employees. Hire new Operations Staff, conduct performance evaluations of Operations Staff. Responsible for overseeing DEI training of all Operations Staff.

    25% - Management
    • Coordination with Faculty, Directors and Stage Managers for Departmental productions, visiting artists, and other guests of our facilities. Review all scenic, costume, lighting, media, and sound designs for feasibility (both fiscal and engineering). Conduct meetings pertaining to this coordination (production meetings, postmortems, meetings of the Departmental Production Committee).

    20% - Planning
    • Planning and Approval of Purchasing for productions, classrooms, shops, and studios. Oversee operations budgets and ProCards. Research and purchase equipment, services, furnishings, tools, and materials in compliance with policy and procedures; consult with faculty, liaise with vendors. Maintain up-to-date inventories of, and manage storage of, production assets (costumes, sets, lighting instruments, properties, hardware, and other materials).

    20% - Facilities Maintenance
    • Management of, and supervision of maintenance for, all PPD facilities. Responsible for overseeing and maintaining safety protocols and disaster preparedness in all PPD facilities. Annually survey the facilities for maintenance/upgrade needs - liaise with faculty about maintenance and upgrades of classrooms and studios. Manage and execute all PPD work order requests. Manage all official PPD vehicles. Prepare classrooms and studios for use each quarter.

    10% - Personal Development
    • Actively pursue opportunities to advance personal and professional knowledge relevant to the profession. Maintain familiarity with current technologies applicable to administrative systems. Undergo professional development, especially in the area of DEI, as appropriate.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • 3-5 years professional experience in one or a combination of any of the following areas: facilities management; supervision of operations; production of performance events, theatrical productions, installations, and/or conferences, or related area.
    • Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
    • Experience working with LGBTQ communities and working with people of diverse social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds, and varying levels of physical ability.
    • Experience in facility and budgetary management. Expertise in non-Western production forms, and in community as well as professional theater.
    • Good working knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Policy, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations.
    • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex information and instructions to disparate constituencies.
    • Good problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
    • Familiarity with how various elements of live theater and other events work together, including costumes, scenic design, sound design, electrics, properties, and academic assets.
    • Practical knowledge of installing interactive digital media, as well as theatrical drawings including CAD software (VectorWorks and/or AutoCAD).
    • Experience working with faculty in teaching, advising, consulting, and grading the work of students.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Practical knowledge of GSuite Applications (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.) and Zoom.
    • Experience working with undergraduate college students.
    • Ability to recognize and complete shop maintenance projects as needed.


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
    • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
    • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
    • Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.
    • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
    • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
    • Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
    • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
    • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
    • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
    • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
    • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
    • Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
    • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
    • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
    • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
    • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
