Research and Development Supervisor supervises activities in the research and development department. A level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Additionally, Research and Development Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members.     The Institute has a small team of high-performing development professionals who are MI’s primary fundraisers. Members of this team act as ambassadors for MI by soliciting contributions, researching new donors, and maintaining relationships with MI’s supporters.

    About the Role

    The Development Officer should be deeply interested in public policy at the national, state, and local levels, and want to help MI raise financial resources. This role is ideal for someone who is keenly analytical and able to maintain and build new relationships for MI that advance the Institute’s mission. Applicants should thrive in entrepreneurial, creative, and fast-paced environments. The Development Officer is required to be a speaker, thinker, and writer who can articulate the value of MI scholars’ projects and goals to audiences of sophisticated, policy-savvy supporters.

    The Development Officer can be based in MI’s New York City office or a virtual office. The Officer will travel up to 40% of their time for donor meetings.

    Responsibilities

    Include, but are not limited to:

    • Overseeing a portfolio of current donors, ensuring continuity, growing relationships, and handling proposal submissions toward the goal of deepening their investment in MI
    • Actively research, cultivate, and secure new gifts from prospective major donors in New York City and across America

    Qualifications

    • 2-5 years of work experience
    • College degree in a relevant field
    • Demonstrated experience translating nuanced ideas to high-level parties in a persuasive manner
    • Excellent speaking, pitching/presentation, and writing skills
    • Willingness to travel up to 40% for donor meetings
    • The ability to manage multiple projects and meet assignment deadlines in a busy environment
    • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational capability
    • Excellent verbal communication skills, both in person and remotely
    • Familiarity with MI policy priorities and the work of MI fellows; a keen interest in supporting and extending this work
