Research and Development Supervisor supervises activities in the research and development department. Oversees personnel who utilize established mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data and write technical reports detailing procedures, outcomes, and observations. Being a Research and Development Supervisor ensures proper procedure, and helps devise new development techniques. A level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Additionally, Research and Development Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members.     Job Description Summary:
    The director of the research development office (RDO) leads the RDO, overseeing activities related to increasing the University of Kansas Medical Center's research productivity and impact, including large and complex extramural funding proposals, training grants, faculty development, and cross-campus collaborations. The director regularly engages with other leaders to strategically advance the research enterprise at KUMC. The director oversees day-to-day operations of the RDO including managing staff and staff capacity, developing, and implementing procedures, workshops, and best practices for research development, collaborating, and engaging with other offices and KUMC colleagues to coordinate research development services and support for the campus and ensure communication to the KUMC campus community regarding support available, policies and procedures, and other critical and helpful information.

    Job Description:
    Required Qualification

    Education and Certifications: Master's degree in a relevant field.

    Work Experience:
    5 - 7 years of experience in research development, grant proposal development/writing, and securing external funding in an academic or research institution.

    Project Management experience.

    Preferred Qualification

    Education: Ph.D. in a relevant field

    Work Experience:
    Experience working in an academic medical setting.

    Experience conducting research development training or workshops.

    Experience in orchestrating large and complex proposal development projects.

    Experience effectively managing people and teams.

    Proficiency in research management systems, grant management software, and data analytics tools.

    Skills:
    Excellent leadership and team management abilities, with the capacity to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.

    Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and influence outcomes.

    Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities, with a track record of making sound decisions.

    In-depth knowledge of research funding agencies, grant programs, and the grant application process.

    Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders, including researchers, faculty, funding agencies, and industry partners.

    Job Duties

    Develop and implement a strategic vision for the office that aligns with the university's goals and objectives.

    Lead and manage a team of research development professionals, providing leadership, guidance, and mentorship to support their professional growth and success.

    Collaborate with KUMC leadership, faculty, and schools to advance research priorities and areas of potential growth.

    Support efforts to secure external research funding through large and complex proposal development, partnerships, and collaborations.

    Provide guidance and support to researchers in developing high-quality grant proposals, ensuring alignment with funding agency requirements.

    Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and networking opportunities to facilitate innovative and impactful research.

    Stay abreast of emerging trends, funding opportunities, and policies in the research landscape, providing regular updates and recommendations to university leadership.

    Build and maintain strong relationships with government relations, funding agencies, industry partners, and other stakeholders to enhance research opportunities and support.

    Facilitate research partnerships and collaborations both within the university and with external organizations, fostering a culture of knowledge exchange and innovation.

    Curate and deliver (when existing) or develop and deliver (when specialization required) research development programs and workshops, for example: grant writing, funding identification, proposal development project management.

    Oversee the tracking and reporting of outputs, outcomes, and impact.

    Compensation Statement:
    The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
