    Major duties and responsibilities include:

    • Analyzes, evaluates, and provides expert advice and consultation regarding the conduct of clinical research studies
    • Mentors and assists research investigators
    • Serves as the leader and liaison for the research community, VA leadership, and university affiliates
    • Administers and manages research programs
    • Serves as the principal investigator for up to thirty funded and unfunded research projects
    • Manages a research program with research assignments that include human subjects, animal, and all other types of research and development activities
    • Serves as a project leader and manages complex, difficult research projects and associated research problem
    • Designs and implements scientific studies, surveys, investigations, projects for areas of diseases, methods of prevention, control, and treatment
    • Conducts and maintains their own research projects
    • Manages a broad scope of research projects and studies ranging from genetics, women's health, epidemiology, infectious disease, internal medicine, and pain.
    • Oversees complex research studies, with varied study designs and large datasets
    • Interprets complex data sets
    • Performs advanced statistical analysis
    • Serves as an independent researcher, with an independent research program, with the freedom and final authority to determine and change the direction of research based on data and results
    • Performs analysis and evaluation to determine best methods for conducting clinical research
    • Performs complex analytical studies, and interprets results to coordinate the evaluation of programs/research projects and recommend improvements
    • Communicates, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency, and assigned program or project areas, provide guidance, advise program administrators, respond to inquiries, and prepare reports

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

    All applicants must meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college or university in a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences that is appropriate to the work of this Supervisory Research Health Scientist.     To qualify for this position at the GS-13 level you must have: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) in Federal Service, that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of this Supervisory Research Health Scientist - Associate Chief of Staff, Research and Development. Specialized experience is experience where you applied mastery of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques involved in the performance of clinical research, to include independently conducting and serving as principal investigator on clinical research projects that required application of extensive knowledge in research design and methodology, data extraction, advanced statistical analysis, manuscript and publication preparation and submission; and providing feedback to others related to clinical research processes.     Physical Requirements: The work is both sedentary and, at times, physically challenging. Typically, the research scientist may sit comfortably to perform portions of the work. However, intermittent periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and carrying light items such as research records, files, books, manuals, etc. As a small research facility, it is not uncommon to have situations where the incumbent is asked to assist with a more physically demanding task. The knowledge of proper lifting techniques is required if the incumbent is physically able to assist in such situations.
