Posted Job Title Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Research Job Profile Title Major Gifts Officer Job Description Summary The Associate Director of Development for Biomedical Research will contribute to the strategy and execution of the Perelman School of Medicine’s development program for its world class biomedical research enterprise. The Associate Director will lead and/or coordinate all fundraising activities for assigned research areas. Responsibilities include working directly with department chairs, center directors, research faculty, and philanthropic prospects and donors. The Associate Director will also support key Dean’s Office priorities, including the Council for Discovery Science and Dean’s Research Innovation Fund. They will work to identify and cultivate prospects who are outside Penn Medicine’s traditional prospect pool. They will foster partnerships with gift officers in Penn Medicine—and throughout the University—whose prospects have interests in biomedical research. The Associate Director will create vision pieces for fundraising purposes translating Penn Medicine leadership’s research priorities and major themes relating to basic and translational research. Job Description Job Responsibilities Develop an understanding of the broad research and educational goals of Penn Medicine, related financial needs, and areas of responsibility within the Perelman School of Medicine. Work with academic leadership, including Department Chairs and Center and Institute Directors, to identify fundraising priorities and prospects, and partner in developing strategies, cultivating and soliciting gifts. Design and prepare major prospect proposals, targeted solicitation materials, including concise communication strategies for basic science faculty (“pitches”). “Tell the story” of great basic and translational research to philanthropic prospects and development colleagues by collaborating with faculty and converting specialized language into compelling proposals and web and video copy. Personally maintain and staff a portfolio of individual and institutional major giving prospects whose interests relate to basic and translational research. Plan, coordinate, and direct visits and special events for prospects and donors, including managing planning for the Council for Discovery Science meetings. Oversee stewardship activities with assigned prospects, and with donors to the Dean’s Office and Council for Discovery Science. Report to the Senior Director of Development and other leadership on fundraising activity through the major gifts tracking/reporting/moves management system. Collaborate with University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine leadership and development colleagues on all matters regarding assigned prospects. **Please provide a resume and cover letter in order to be considered for this role. Please upload all documents in the “Resume/CV” section of the application prior to submitting.** Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including an understanding of research enterprise, development, volunteer management, alumni relations, and communications methods and techniques; or equivalent combination of education and experience required. An advanced degree in a scientific field (STEM or social science), public health, or public administration valued. Expertise in development or grant activities in fields outside of higher education may count as directly relevant work experience. Demonstrated experience in dealing with faculty, administrators, physicians, and other constituent groups. Strong administrative and project management experience in order to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising goals. Ability to function independently, and also work collaboratively within a centralized development structure. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Event planning experience a plus. Highly proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign, and database software. Experience with graphic design valued. Ability to travel locally, nationally and internationally.
