    General Summary
    We are seeking a Strategy & Innovation Fellow to work directly with the Office of the CEO supporting mission critical projects at Southern Research. We are looking for an energetic and nimble executer who thinks critically, relishes details, effectively collaborates with leadership to achieve mission-critical outcomes, and has demonstrated an interest in scientific research, commercialization, and economic growth. Reporting to the CEO but strong cross functional relationships with leadership in Communications, People & Community, Business & Commercialization, and Population Health, this individual will be a key contributor to designing and executing a unique portfolio of initiatives, including the creation of communication assets (written, audio and visual), coordinating projects with internal and external partners, and board communications and management. In this role, the Strategy & Innovation Fellow will also work with our leadership team to create shared context, drive clarity, and appropriately prioritize time, attention, and resources towards Southern Research key areas of focus.

    This team member will develop skills in strategic financial planning, project management, biotech research, and economic development. This appointment is for one year with an option to renew or move into a different role within the company.
    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    • Works directly with the CEO to pursue significant investment opportunities, funding for strategic initiatives, execute enterprise-wide objectives, and support the implementation of new programs
    • Manage a portfolio of strategic projects, especially those that interface with the broader community
    • Prepare strategic communications that serve to explain complex scientific subjects to a broader audience, especially in new and expanding business lines or to support the Southern Research board of directors
    • Translate data and information into comprehensible spreadsheets and presentations using graphs, charts, images and video for senior leadership at UAB, Southern Research, including board members, and other key public and private partners
    • Serve as a thought partner to the leadership team on cross-functional operational and strategic topics including but not limited to –strategic positioning of the Catalyst Project, resource development, and stakeholder collaborations
    • Synthesize data and research to support our work, inform strategy, and develop internal and external communication assets, including the potential development of testimonials or case studies
    • Collaborate as a problem-solver on mission-critical challenges and developments
    • Assist the CEO in the development of communications and presentations, especially those that explain the organization’s vision and strategy to public audiences and those that are intended to develop partnerships or secure sponsorship
    Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
    • 2-4 years of experience in strategy, research, economic development, and communications OR post-graduate degree in business, finance, or biological sciences
    • Passionate about economic development and community health - Authentic desire in innovation-driven economic development through translation of excellent scientific research, especially in public-private partnerships
    • Highly collaborative - You care less about who did it than how it got done. You take deep pride in shared outcomes and you really believe the whole is greater than the sum of the parts when it comes to team efforts.
    • Nimble executor – translating goals and objectives into actionable business priorities and work streams for the team to execute is second-nature for you.
    • Excellent written communication skills - Highly skilled in writing great emails, an expert in shorter vs longer summaries, and known for making amazing PowerPoint decks.
