  • Summary:

New Hampshire Public Radio is seeking a bilingual reporter to report for and on immigrant communities, with a special focus on Spanish-speaking communities. These stories will be done in English and Spanish, feeding our WhatsApp news service, ¿Qué Hay de Nuevo, New Hampshire?, which has been recognized nationally as an innovator in bilingual reporting and community outreach, as well as our on-air and digital English language news platforms.

You'll be joining a small team that's grown over the last four years that tells stories of every day joy, life and innovation within immigrant communities, while holding public institutions accountable for responding to the needs of this growing population in New Hampshire.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in broadcast, print or digital journalism and will be ready to jump on breaking news. But we're also looking for someone with a passion for creative storytelling and exploring unexpected stories that touch our audience and make an impact. We're also looking for someone who's versatile when it comes to their journalism. On any given day, you might find yourself reporting from a community meeting, a local business or school, the campaign trail, or the State House. Collaboration is also key to how we work, and we're looking for someone who loves teaming up with others. NHPR is committed to mentoring our journalists, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders.

This position reports to one of our Senior News Editors and is based in New Hampshire's Southern Tier, where the immigrant population is growing rapidly, with flexibility to work remotely some days per week.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Gather, write and produce news reports for on-air broadcast and digital distribution, including reports in Spanish for our WhatsApp newscast.
    • Use initiative and source development to develop both daily news and enterprise reporting.
    • Stay up to date on national and regional issues affecting immigrant communities.
    • Develop new projects for NHPR News, including multi-part series and digital products, with a focus on journalism and storytelling that engages a new, diverse audience.
    • Work varied shifts to meet news coverage demands, including breaking news and other appropriate coverage reasons.
    • Work with editor & audience team to coordinate some in-person engagement events to connect with immigrant communities and Spanish-speaking audiences.
    • Join meetings with community-media partnership group to develop relationships and collaboration with other NH outlets through the Granite State News Collaborative who are supportive of Spanish-language media and engagement.
    • Utilize social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter and others, to disseminate news to the NHPR audience and beyond.
    • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities.
    • Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take initiative to learn new skills in reporting, on-air presentation and digital news production.

    Required Skills:

    • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish - both written and spoken

    Preferred Skills and Experience:

    • A minimum of two years of reporting experience.
    • Excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories.
    • Demonstrated success in building trust with sources to produce original news coverage.
    • Ability to develop creative approaches to human interest coverage and feature stories.
    • Passion and intuition for radio, a keen eye and ear for media trends and audience needs.
    • Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing data visualizations, video or other digital media, as well as audio, are desirable.
    • One year of broadcast journalism, with radio script writing experience, is preferred.
    • Experience covering one of the following is preferred: labor, immigration or racial equity, newcomer and immigrant communities.
    • Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics in the course of interviewing, reporting and use of social media.
    • Bachelor's degree in a related subject area or relevant experience.

...but we know there are great candidates who may not have all these qualities or who have important skills we may not have outlined above. If this is you, do not hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

    Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt, SAG-AFTRA union position, and the salary range for this role is $53,700 - $58,000 annually.

NHPR offers a generous benefits package that includes health and dental insurance; company-paid short- and long-term disability; flexible spending accounts; 403(b) savings plan with a company match and a free on-site fitness center. Employees are entitled to three weeks of vacation time, twelve paid holidays, two floating personal days, and paid sick and parental leave.
