Reporter
  • Capital Public Radio
  • Dillingham, AK FULL_TIME
  • Dillingham City School District / Radio Station KDLG

    Position Announcement

    Host / Reporter

Public radio station KDLG has an opening for a Host / Reporter.

Duties include hosting local newscasts and reporting.

Radio station KDLG lies in the heart of beautiful Bristol Bay, the sockeye salmon capital of the world. KDLG is owned by the Dillingham City School District and serves southwest Alaska communities.

Dillingham is a commercial fishing community with a yearly population of 2,500. It is accessible only by air about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage.

The town has a population that is fifty percent Alaska Native and is the hub for a number of Native villages in the region.

The mountains, lakes, and rivers in the region make it one of the premier destinations for hunters, fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

    • Host daily newscasts. Have some fun, hit the posts. If you’re on the early shift, chances are people in villages near and far in Bristol Bay are waking up with you .
    • ahem, Chris-in-the-morning. In one breath, can you give the latest on the approaching winter storm, and in the next, sincerely relay that Jenny’s bake sale has moved from Tuesday to Thursday, in lieu of the weather?
    • You’re hungry to report the local news. Outside your window, kids are climbing on a bus to go to the airport to fly to a weekend sports tournament (no road games here), and you see some tape.

A generic press release in your inbox challenges you to find the local angle instead of calling the listed spokesperson.

Was there an arrest, fire, school board, or City Council meeting last night? Can you do something with that coming blizzard, or Jenny’s bake sale?

People around town begin to wonder why you’re never seen without a Marantz and a pen in your shirt pocket.

    • You’re anxious and able to take on the bigger stories. A shortage of local law enforcement, climate change, the largest salmon fishery in the world, state politics, local politics, Native politics, the highest cost of energy in the nation, and the proposed Pebble Mine .
    • these ought to get you started.
    • You are a Leatherman of quick-turnaround reporting ... when local news happens on your watch, you quickly get three solid lines in our 8 : 30 newscast, expand the copy for longer mid-day news, package it for the Alaska Public Radio Network, and put a final version on the web.

Two-ways, live remotes on a shaky cell phone connection, sound-rich features ... but a few of the tools you possess.

    • Help produce our summer show, the Bristol Bay Fisheries Report. It's more free-form than our daily newscasts, with room for features, two-way interviews, poetry, music, and voices from the boatyard and beyond.
    • Be open to travel to remote villages, seasonal camps and bustling fishing towns. Whether it’s for the ribbon-cutting of a new bridge, to meet an interesting old-timer, or for a cultural celebration, there are opportunities to get out.
    • We also expect you to have some fun up here, get to know folks, and get out and enjoy the country.
    • You'll have the chance to collaborate with new and experienced reporters around the state, from Alaska Public Media in Anchorage to KYUK in Bethel.

We are looking for the adventurous candidate with hopefully a year of experience in radio journalism or equivalent work.

Salary is competitive with an excellent retirement program and benefits. To apply, email a letter of interest, resume, samples, and references to :

    Sam Gardner, General Manager

    or send to :

KDLG Radio, Box 670, Dillingham, AK 99576

Applications taken until the job is filled.

KDLG is an Equal Opportunity employer and encourages women and minorities to apply.

    Salary range : $45,552 - $59,425

KDLG is licensed to the Dillingham City Schools the successful applicant will have full medical / dental health plan and participate in the state of Alaska Public Employees Retirement program.

Alaska is the northernmost and westernmost state in the United States and has the most easterly longitude in the United States because the Aleutian Islands extend into the Eastern Hemisphere. Alaska is the only non-contiguous U.S. state on continental North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of British Columbia (Canada) separates Alaska from Washington. It is technically part of the continental U.S., but is sometimes not included in colloquial use; Alaska is not part of the contiguous U.S., often called "the Lower 48". The capital city, Juneau, is situated on the mainland of the North American ...
