Position Summary: The Admissions Specialist is responsible for utilizing clinical expertise to perform assessments of patients potentially requiring mental health services. Clerical duties consisting of incoming phones, taking messages, sending emails, and reviewing referral packets. Maintain strict confidentiality of facility and patients. Provide positive customer service to patients, their families, and referral sources always. Represent the organization in a professional and respectful manner when off duty and in the community.

Responsibilities:

• Review prospective admissions with working knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, and lab work
• Communicate with the doctor any prospective patients’ medical history for approval
• Conduct pre-admission assessments
• Initiate contact to gather required clinical and demographic data from patient and other sources
• Must demonstrate sound judgment and exhibit positive decision-making skills always when working with patients. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to maintain composure and restrict emotional or reactive behaviors when confronted with physical or verbal altercations by patients and residents
• Provide positive customer service to visitors, guests, employees, and patients assisting them with the matters they present
• Receive incoming phone calls directing them to the proper department/contact person, log and communicate messages provided by the caller, transfer calls to and from the units. Page codes over the intercom when a code comes through on the radio
• Communicate with the doctor any prospective patients’ medical history for approval
• Collaborate with other facility medical and psychiatric personnel to ensure appropriate recommendations and admissions
• Assist prospective patients and significant others in seeking treatment
• Coordinate with referral sources
• Responsible for maintaining all the documentation involved with the admissions process
• Conducts insurance verifications
• Perform other functions and tasks as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  H.S. Diploma/GED and a minimum of 2 years working in behavioral health or medical office or Associate/Bachelor’s degree in the medical field.

Experience: Previous experience working in the medical field. Ability to read charts (knowledge of medical terminology, understanding of lab values, and medical diagnoses). Must have strong communication, organization, negotiation, and public relation skills and be proficient with a computer.
