    The Assistant Director of Community Relations plays a pivotal role in facilitating effective communication with the public and executing city-wide marketing initiatives. This position encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, including administrative, technological, marketing, and organizational functions. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication skills, sound judgment, initiative, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.Work includes overseeing the participation in marketing, planning, design, and execution of a variety of communications for events; overseeing the Fort Johnston Visitors’ Center and Museum acting as City Liaison for the NC 4th of July Festival; serving on the Cemetery Committee; serving as the Assistant Public Information Officer; and serving as the back-up for the City's website and social media platforms.

    EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
    Essential Duties and TasksAssist in Planning, Marketing, and Implementation of City/Non-Profit Activities: Collaborate in the planning, marketing, and implementation of city and non-profit activities, aligning them with departmental goals and objectives.Attend festival and event planning sessions, serving as a liaison between non-profit groups and the City.Create compelling advertisements for local and regional publications, such as the State Port Pilot, Southport Magazine, and Leland Magazine.Develop printed materials, including brochures, print ads, rack cards, and maps.Promote existing tourist attractions through strategic advertising campaigns, promotional materials, and networking with local, regional, and state media outlets.Assist in developing marketing and informational materials for visitors.Design and implement marketing strategies to increase tourist traffic.Attend City meetings as required.Perform other related duties as needed. Fort Johnston Visitor’s Center Duties: Oversee the management of the Fort Johnston-Southport Museum and Visitors’ Center.Supervise volunteers, including scheduling their shifts and ensuring smooth operations.Provide primary phone coverage for the Fort Johnston/Southport Museum and Visitors’ Center.Keep volunteers and the public informed of events and community news.Monitor displays in Visitor Displays and report necessary maintenance.Manage the event bulletin board and brochure kiosks.Assist with displays, exhibits, and maintenance of existing exhibits.Ensure facility maintenance, address public restroom issues, and maintain supplies.Perform other related duties as needed.City of Southport Communications Duties: Maintain and update the “City of Southport” and the "Visit Southport" Facebook pages, Instagram, and Twitter with events and marketing materials.Responsible for the web design and maintenance on the "Explore Southport" webpage.Creation and upkeep of the “Southport on Film” webpage and spearhead the development and continued execution of the highly successful marketing campaign "Southport on Film" with the objective of generating heightened interest and engagement in Southport's film industry.Creation and continued use of “Explore Southport,” an electronic Visitor’s Package. Regularly update and maintain the electronic visitors package, ensuring that it remains a reliable and valuable resource for tourists.Create the monthly City newsletter.Creation and management of surveys, including data collection, data entry, and quality control processes.Serving in an official capacity as the assistant PIO in emergency situations, as dictated by the Public Information Officer. Attend City meetings as required.Provide backup support for other communication duties during absences.NC Fourth of July NC Fourth of July Duties: Serve as the primary liaison between the City and the NC 4th of July Festival Board of Directors.Aid in the development of marketing and informational materials.Maintain and update the "NC 4th of July Festival" Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter page. Responsible for the web design and maintenance on the "nc4thofjulyfestival.com" website.Responsible for mass communications to the public about Festival activities via Festival’s Mailchimp account.Review ads and press releases to ensure consistency with the calendar of events.Submit city request lists to the City of Southport and Town of Oak Island ahead of the festival.Act as an on-site contact and coordinator when requested.Attend monthly, special, and committee meetings as required.Respond to public inquiries and connection requests, ensuring proper communication with division or committee chairs.Participate in fundraising activities and assist with administration.Represent the Festival at public events as requested by the Director of Community Relations.

    Desirable Education and ExperienceBachelor's Degree in marketing, event planning, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of relevant experience in the non-profit or public sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
