Being a Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between hospitals, clinical staff, health plans, providers, and patients to process referrals. Verifies insurance coverage and obtains required authorizations when necessary. Additionally, Referral Specialist documents referrals, communications, actions, and other data in an information management system. Generates and distributes all applicable forms, notifications, and paperwork. Requires a high school diploma. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Referral Specialist works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.   • Job Summary

    The Referral Specialist Coordinator will be responsible for training and implementing the Referral Specialist's workflow for their assigned clinics/locations.  The Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that processes and audits are in place for our Referral staff to properly prepare and obtain authorizations and pre-certifications for patient referrals. The Coordinator will have oversight on all Referral staff to ensure verification of patient's benefits and eligibility are being met timely.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The Referral Specialist Coordinator performs the following duties as assigned.

     

    Essential Functions

    • Oversight of Referral program for assigned clinics or locations
    • Ensure that Referral staff are properly trained and knowledgeable 
    • Develop tools for audit to ensure compliance
    • Implement workflow and changes as needed
    • Prepares and submits reports to Administration or other management as needed
    • Keeps appropriate statistical records. 
    • Attends all meetings that apply to the referral process and shares the information with appropriate clinic personnel. These meetings may be off-site and may require the use of personal vehicle or other transit. 
    • Performs other duties and projects as assigned. 

     

    1. Fulfills administrative duties.
      1. Assists in maintaining an efficient, safe, secure, orderly, and aseptic environment of care for all patients and employees.
      2. Is familiar with and abides by OSHA Standards, Hazardous Materials, Universal Precautions, use of personal protective equipment, Evacuation, Fire, Disaster, and Safety Plans.

     

    1. Performs all other duties as assigned.

    • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations

    • Ability to identify improvements needed and implement proper processes
    • Patient and compassionate when interacting with patients and staff. 
    • Work in a team-oriented environment with a number of professionals with different work styles and support needs.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills and ability to effectively work with people from diverse backgrounds and be culturally sensitive. 
    • Demonstrated ability to set priorities for tasks and to work effectively under minimal supervision in spite of interruption
    • Ability to be dependable in terms of attendance and completion of work as scheduled.

    Preferred

    • Spanish speaking and writing skills

     

    Education and Experience

     

    • High school diploma or GED. 
    • Minimum one year clinical/office experience.
    • Proficient in Microsoft office, tables, and flyers
    • Licensed Vocational Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing
    • Current unrestricted licensed from the Texas or Arkansas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners (applicable state to assigned clinic location) to practice as a licensed vocational nurse
    • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Professionals Certification
