Recreational Therapy Director directs the programs and staff of the recreational therapy department including policies and procedures. Sets and implements guidelines for recreational therapy programs. Being a Recreational Therapy Director conducts patient programs in areas of social interaction, theater, games, crafts, and music. Communicates the results of patient care to other health services. Additionally, Recreational Therapy Director may require an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. May require professional certification. The Recreational Therapy Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Ridge Behavioral Health System is a 110-bed hospital located in the heart of the Bluegrass, Lexington, KY. The Ridge provides psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. The Ridge offers Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient Programs, Individual Counseling, as well as Medication Management for all ages. We have provided behavioral health services to over 92 Kentucky counties for more than 39 years.


    Job Duties include:

    • Ensures recreational therapy staff provide therapy consistent with departmental philosophy, patient’s treatment goals, and consistent with age, and functioning.
    • Uses appropriate counseling skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.
    • Develops and implements recreational therapy treatment plans in conjunction with the interdisciplinary treatment team.
    • Actively participates in treatment team meetings and other clinical management meetings and committees.

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation required.

    Experience

    • Previous mental health experience 3-5 years preferred.
    • Inpatient psychiatric/substance abuse experience preferred.

    Certifications/Licensure

    • Certification as a CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist) required.
    • Crisis intervention training required. This training also offered upon hire.
    • CPR. Offered upon hire.
