Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Good verbal and written skills, ability to rotate shifts and programs as necessary and ability to maintain confidentiality of resident information. Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional ability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job. Knowledge of principles of psychology and child growth and development are useful. Limit setting, responding to children and adolescents in a caring, mature manner while maintaining professional boundaries necessary.
Education: Bachelor's degree in related field
Licensure/Certification: Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist; Maintain current Handle with Care (bi-annually), CPR (BLS Provider annually) First Aid Certifications. In order to operate The Hughes Center's Vehicles a current Virginia driver's license with a good driving record (minimum of 1 points) is required.
Experience: Two years of related experience with children, adolescents and young adult population or undergraduate degree in behavioral science.
