Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Provides therapeutic groups in the Inpatient behavioral Health Unit. Possesses excellent assessment and organizational skills. Communicates all pertinent information to appropriate personnel. Demonstrates the essential skill competencies to facilitate group and individual therapeutic activities.

    Demonstrates the ability to work with the seriously and persistently mentally ill.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Essential Functions 

    • Utilizes music, art, and dance activities to assist patients in meeting their treatment goals.
    • Documents patient’s progress on treatment goals and maintains accurate records.
    • Assesses reports from the psychiatrist, nurses, social workers, and others on the treatment team to determine a patient’s functioning level.
    • Actively engages patients during treatment sessions.
    • Coordinates care interventions with other members of the treatment team.
    • Helps patients reduce depression, stress, and anxiety during their hospital stay.
    • Communicates effectively with patients, family, treatment team members.
    • Designs life skill programs, leisure activities, and individualized programs that meet patients’ recovery needs.
    • Active participant in treatment team meetings.
    • Participates in all regulatory processes as directed.

    Minimum Education/Certifications
    Bachelor's degree or higher. Licensure as a certified recreational therapist

    Minimum Work Experience
    One year of experience is preferred.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Monday through Friday; two rotating weekends a month.
