Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Job Summary:
    The candidate selected for this Recreation Therapist position will provide recreation programs to patients on the Nursing - Psychiatry Unit. Working within a multi-disciplinary treatment team, responsibilities include: maintaining structured, daily programs and group therapies; monitor and report patient participation and progress; organize monthly activity plans, and participate in treatment planning meetings. Provide education and training to Mental Health Workers for activity plans, and participate in treatment planning meetings. Provide education and training to Mental Health Workers for group therapy and recreational therapy. Excellent communication skills, critical thinking and crisis management skills are necessary.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Possession of Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy or a related field and one year of professional recreation experience in a therapeutic, instructional or rehabilitation setting. Certified Therapeutic Rec Specialist (issued by NCTRC) required.
