Recreational Therapist jobs in New York, NY

Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     • Provides recreational therapeutic assessment of patients admitted to the unit.
    • Assesses patient’s leisure, social and recreational abilities, deficiencies, interests, barriers, life experiences, needs and potential.
    • Plans and provides individual/group treatment services to improve social, emotional, cognitive and physical functional behaviors.
    • Plans and provides leisure educational activities.
    • Assists the patient in acquiring the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for independent leisure and social activities; adjustment in community; decision-making ability, and appropriate use of free time.
    • Implements and coordinates individualized recreation therapy programs.
    • Discusses treatment plan and/or problems with involved physicians, nursing staff and other members of the patient care team as appropriate.
    • Documents all events that occur during the regimen.
    • Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities noted here are considered essential functions of the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Duties not mentioned here, but considered related are not essential functions.

    Job Qualification

    • Bachelor's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
    • Current Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
    • 1-3 years of relevant experience, required.
