Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     PRIMARY PURPOSE:

     

    Assess, plan, and offer physical therapy services to Beaumont ISD students with disabilities. Provide educationally appropriate interventions to enable Beaumont ISD students to benefit from special education instruction.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    Education/Certification:

    • Master’s degree in physical therapy or related program
    • Valid Texas license as a physical therapist granted by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Special

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Knowledge of medical information and indications for school based physical therapy services using an educational model
    • Skill in the use of tests and measurements for assessing physical function in the school environment
    • Ability to administer manual exercises and physical therapy treatments for school based physical therapy services
    • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

    Experience:

    • Educational experience, preferred

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

     

    Performance Responsibilities

    1. Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for school based
      physical therapy services.
    2. Plan and provide direct services consistent with the educational model of physical therapy goals contained in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
    3. Assist in the implementation of modifications required for special education students in the classroom.
    4. Evaluate and document student progress and determine readiness for termination of physical therapy services when appropriate.
    5. Provide progress reports at the end of each grading period.
    6. Design, construct, alter and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence in the educational setting.
    7. Consult with educational staff and parents regarding physical therapy.
    8. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education Rules, and the local school board
    9. Manage and maintain physical therapy prescriptions.
    10. Maintain appropriate logs for SHARS reporting.
    11. Effectively interpret the philosophy and rationale for special education services as it pertains to physical therapy services to campus level staff through in-service, staff meetings and conferences.
    12. Provide consultation to all staff members working with pupils receiving special services.
    13. Ensure confidentiality for student information.
    14. Other duties as assigned.

    Administration and Fiscal/Facilities

    1. Maintain accurate data for departmental reporting purposes.
    2. Maintain complete and accurate data records.
    3. Meet timelines as indicated by state and federal mandates.
    4. Complete forms according to department guidelines.
    5. Implement policies and procedures as established.
    6. Accept completed referrals and discuss current needs of the student prior to evaluation.
    7. Promptly assess students referred for special education physical therapy.
    8. Make recommendations for meeting the educational needs of students based on assessment information.
