Summary
This position serves as an integral part of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Office of Railroad Safety's, Grade Crossing and Trespasser Outreach Division.
The Railroad Safety Inspector (GX) is required to conduct independent inspections of all types of highway-rail grade crossings, proceeds, and programs for the purpose of determining compliance with Federal Rules and Regulations.
Duties
The Railroad Safety Inspector :
Performs inspections of railroad Emergency Notification Systems (CFR 49 Part 234, Subpart E). Performs inspections of railroad records of .
DOT Crossing Inventory Reporting (49 CFR Part 234, Subpart F). Performs inspections of railroad and public authority compliance with the Train Horn Rule and Quiet Zones (49 CFR Part 222).
Serves as a subject matter expert on 49 CFR : Part 222.
Investigates independently, or as part of a team, grade crossing collisions and trespasser incidents / accidents as assigned.
Prepares any necessary analysis and recommendations to Senior Managers and Specialists.
Where noncompliance of Federal rules, regulations, or standards is noted, the inspector initiates immediate correction and, if in the opinion of the inspector, the condition is such as to present a serious hazard, a violation report is issued.
The incumbent may then be required to appear as the expert witness in a court trial.
Represents the FRA and District while participating in initiatives, studies, surveys, reviews, promotions, etc., regarding highway-rail crossing and trespasser programs with local communities, states, the railroad industry and FRA's safety partners.
Represents FRA before state and local legislatures and planning bodies, as assigned, providing information and accurately communicating Departmental policy regarding crossing and trespasser strategies.
