Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II administers radiation therapy by exposing specific areas of the patient's body to prescribed doses of radiation. Maintains patient charts, noting such information as the area treated, the radiation dosage, equipment control settings, the patient's reactions, and the total amount of radiation received to date. Being a Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II consults with radiation oncologists and other clinical staff as needed. May require a bachelor's degree in a related area. Additionally, Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II typically requires graduation from an accredited radiation therapy program, certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), and a state license to practice. Typically reports to a physician or manager. The Radiation Therapy Technologist (ARRT) II work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     The Radiation Therapist Assistant position is a bridge position until the associate obtains their ARRT and MD license to work as a Radiation Therapist. 

    Radiation Therapist Assistant Assists the radiation therapists by prioritizing daily activities with emphasis on accessory equipment fabrication, technical services and patient care. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health-RadAmerica's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Two years of College completed Radiation Therapy Technology required

    • CPR

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • A wide variety of patient treatment techniques are followed.
    • Radiation Therapist Assistants must possess the ability to visualize three dimensionally and have the technical/mechanical aptitude to understand the operation and limitations of all equipment and accessory equipment specific to this profession.
    • As an Assistant to Radiation Therapists must be able to possess the ability to comprehend the basics of radiation therapy technology and remain calm in potentially serious situations.


    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cuts, fabricates, and mounts cerrobend blocks and electron block cutouts used during patients' treatment. Verifies the appropriate orientation of the film, and the physician's initials before cutting the blocks. Completes all appropriate documentation and bills according in EMR. Ascertains whether wedges are to be used before mounting blocks. Performs periodic quality assurance procedures and cutting wire repair on the Huestis block cutter.
  • Assists in creating custom made immobilization devices (Masks, Vac-Bags etc.).
  • Under the direct supervision of the Radiation Therapists, assists the radiation therapists with the treatment of patients. Includes but not limited to; assiting the therapist with the Time-Out Procedure, sending the plan from the EMR to the treatment machine, reads the treatment charts, greets the patients, assists the patient onto and off of the treatment table, sets the treatment parameters including field size, SSD, etc., gets the necessary treatment devices, and adheres to universal precaution guidelines.
  • Assists the radiation therapy team with the performance of working up new patient/reduced field treatment charts and weekly chart checks.
  • Physically escorts patients by wheelchair within the department and outside of the department when needed. Must be able to move or assist patients independently from wheelchairs or stretchers to and from treatment table (approximately from floor to table top). Must be able to operate oxygen tanks. Escorts the patient from the reception area to the changing rooms. Escorts patient from changing room to the treatment room. Escorts the patient from the treatment room back to the changing room.
  • Communicates with physicians, patients, and their families by directing their inquires to the appropriate staff member. Confirms daily treatment appointment times with patient's family, social workers, and abulance companies for transportation arrangements
  • Assists the radiation therapist to ensure daily documentation is accurate for the following tasks: Time Out Assessment for each patient treated. Daily billing entries for each patient is accurate. Missed treatments are documented accurately.
  • Assists administrative staff with front office responsibilities. Including but not limited to; answering the phones, taking messages, greeting patients, and copying documents
  • Maintains linen inventory in the treatment and simulation rooms. Stocks the treatment room and patient changing rooms with clean sheets, gowns and towels, removes and stores the soiled linen bags.
  • Request and restocks supplies for work area and stores them in a safe and clean work environment while adhering to OSHA regulations.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all inclusive.
