Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist calculates computerized isodose plans for radiation oncology patients. Computes standard dose calculations and determines computerized generation of isodose curves for external beam hyperthermia and brachytherapy radiation treatment programs. Being a Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist calculates treatment machine settings, documents calculations, and records treatment data in therapy chart. Interprets physician prescriptions to develop a therapeutic treatment plan. Additionally, Radiation Therapy Dosimetrist typically requires completion of a training program in medical dosimetry and ARRT registration in radiation therapy. Requires a bachelor's degree of physical or biological sciences. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.     Responsibilities

    Calculates and plans prescribed doses of radiation for patients receiving both external and brachytherapy treatments according to physician’s orders. Care is given for patients from early childhood to adults at various developmental levels. Patients can be from both traditional and non-traditional family structure with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.

    • Calculates accurate dose of radiation as prescribed by physicians to ensure desired clinical outcomes
    • Generates computer conformal dosimetry plans to portray dose distributions in patient body tissues in order to spare organs and normal tissue
    • Assists with brachytherapy treatment program in compliance with hospital, state and federal regulations to ensure employee and public safety
    • Participates in quality improvement and quality assurance programs to ensure that the accuracy and safety of radiation treatments is maximized
    • Participates in simulation setups to ensure that the utmost immobilization techniques are being utilized during treatments
    • Downloads all blocked area perimeters as drawn by physician into the computer’s multi-leaf system for precise patient treatment on the accelerator
    • Checks patient charts daily and schedules timely cone down simulations for patients currently on treatment in accordance with physician’s prescription
    • Participates in patient setups during treatment planning CTs while overseeing CT technologist to ensure optimal scans for computer planning
    • Draws diagrams of initial treatment setups and enters accurate treatment plan information into daily treatment chart
    • Maintains knowledge of current equipment, processes, and procedures pertaining to radiation dosimetry
    • Generates computer treatment plan of a specific area of the anatomy

    Qualifications

    Education

    • Knowledge of calculating and planning for prescribed doses of radiation for patients receiving both external and brachytherapy treatments and so forth as normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in a closely related field (i.e., Science, Chemistry, Physics)

    Licenses & Certifications

    • ARRT (RT) and Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) Registry
    • BLS from the American Heart Association

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Analytical ability necessary in order to calculate prescribed doses of radiation for patients
    • Interpersonal skills necessary to explain treatment process to patients, inform physician of patients progress and exchange and gather information with patients families, visitors, co-workers and other hospital personnel

    Attention to detail for up to 60% of work time when calculating prescribed doses of radiation, checking the patients chart for treatment parameters and completeness, calculating total accumulative doses and so forth
