Health Physicist - Radiation Measurement and Irradiations
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
  • Richland, WA FULL_TIME
  • Overview:
At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

The Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering (NCE) Group is seeking an outstanding Health Physicist to provide technical support for radiological instrument calibrations, dosimetry proficiency testing, non-destructive assay, radiation effects testing, and overall program support. This program is executed in the Radiation Measurements and Irradiations (RMI) service center located in the 318 building.

The Health Physicist is responsible to gather, analyze, and evaluate information from a variety of sources; anticipate internal and external business challenges, sponsor and/or regulatory issues; recommend process or service improvements; utilize technical expertise in one or more scientific, engineering, or policy disciplines; determine significance and reliability of incoming information, integrating new information with current data; evaluate information to determine a recommended course of action; apply and interpret theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies within an area of specialty; and provide domain knowledge and insight on mission needs to multidisciplinary project teams comprised of scientists and engineers.

The RMI team is a world-leader in radiation metrology, and has national impact by providing dosimetry proficiency testing, on behalf of the National Institute of Standards and Testing (NIST), for every organization in the country that has an NRC license and a radiation worker safety program. The radiation metrology business generates over $5M worth of business to PNNL annually.

The RMI Service Center capabilities include multiple X-ray and gamma-source radiation fields allowing dose rates from 100 μrad/h up to 5 Mrad/h. Mini-ovens, incubators and environmental chambers allow irradiation over a range of temperatures and environmental conditions. Other capabilities include a Low Scatter Neutron Facility with D-T, Cf-252 and Am-Be neutron sources, an Industrial X-ray Facility, and a Beta Irradiation Facility with Sr/Y-90, Kr-85, and depleted uranium sources. The successful candidate will be trained on the operation of the radiation generating devices (RGDs) needed for the research, and mentored on management of the R&D tasks and projects they support.
