Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.   • What You Will Do

    The Radiation Protection division is seeking health physicist graduate students with basic nuclear engineering or health physicist principles to include radiological engineering, instrumentation, analysis, or implementation. In this position, you will work closely with staff Radiation Protection professionals to identify and investigate radiation hazards and assist higher-level staff in the full range of health physics and/or radiological engineering assignments.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:
    • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in a nuclear engineering or health physics discipline.
    • Must be a Graduate Student and enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours.
    • Demonstrated strong analytical, research, presentation, and mathematical skills.
    • Strong respect and adherence to established safety, security, and environmental protection practices and requirements.
    • Entry-level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
    • Entry-level skill to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
    • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.

    • Exposure to real world applications of radiological principles.
    • Knowledge of Health Physics principles, theories, and concepts and their applications in operational or research settings.
    • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

    Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision; Ability to speak; Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz).

    Work Environment:

    Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.

    Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

    426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
