Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     There are two Radiation Health Physicist 2 (RHP2) roles available. They operate within the Radioactive Air Emissions Section (RAES) under the supervision of the section manager, as a member of the Office of Radiation Protection in the Division of Environmental Public Health. In this capacity, the position involves the creation of licenses for radioactive air emissions and the performance of compliance inspections on units responsible for such emissions. Responsibilities encompass assessing construction applications, preparing approvals for construction and operating licenses, conducting inspections to detect air emission issues, ensuring corrective measures are implemented, and reviewing air emission reports.

     

    The duty station for these full-time permanent RHP2 position is Richland, WA. Work is conducted remotely from a home office, in person at the Richland office, or in the field. It is expected they travel statewide and out of state when necessary to perform the core functions of the position, including assigned inspections.

    Required Qualifications

    Required Education:

    A Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, engineering or biological science, or a closely related field.

     

    Required Experience:

     

    Option 1: One (1) year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1 in an official radiation control program or air pollution regulatory control program.

     

    OR

     

    Option 2: Two (2) years in an official radiation control program or air pollution regulatory control program.

     

    NOTE: An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote full-time staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.

     

    Computer Skills: Each option’s experience will include practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.

     

     

    Desired Qualifications 

     

    • A Master's degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics or related field.
    • Experience with federal (40 CFR Part 61) and state (chapter 246-247) radioactive air emissions requirements. 
    • Experience with radioactive licensees within the state of Washington.
    • Experience in the field of Radiation Science such that professional experience and education can be used to make judgment-based decisions that protect the public from sources of radioactivity and ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and standards.
