    Job Specifics

    Under the supervision of the Corporate Health Physics Group, the person chosen for this role will implement on a day to day basis the radiation safety program at the NPHS Indianapolis Innovation Center and Pre-Commercial Manufacturing Center for radiopharmaceuticals. This location produces and distributes radioactive drugs and medical radioisotopes in an FDA-regulated, current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) environment. Radioisotopes will include alpha, beta, and gamma emitters. Working closely with the operational teams, this role is based on-site at our Indianapolis facility.

    This role is responsible for implementing radiation safety procedures, programs, processes, and systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements and to eliminate or minimize risks to the company, its employees, the environment and the community in which the company does business.
     

    This role will be filled with the expectation that, following training, the individual chosen will eventually be named radiation safety officer on the radioactive materials license.

    Qualifications

    • Two (2) or more years of experience
    • BA, BS in health physics or a closely related field or equivalent radiation safety or nuclear pharmacy/manufacturing experience.

    Typical Duties and Responsibilities

    The day-to-day duties are typically as follows:

    General surveillance over activities involving radioactive material, including routine monitoring and special surveys. Ensuring compliance with NRC regulations as well as conditions of the Radioactive Material License. Monitoring the performance of fume hoods/glove boxes/hot cells that are associated with isotope work. Serving as the primary site-level resource of radiation protection information for personnel at all levels of responsibility. Reviewing the receipt, opening, and delivery of all incoming and outgoing shipments of radioactive material arriving at the production facility. Distribute and process personnel monitoring equipment. Conducting on the job trainingin proper procedures for the use of radioactive material. Implement and coordinate the site radioactive waste disposal program. Ensure the safe storage of all radioactive materials not in current use. Ensuring that sealed sources are leak-tested at proper intervals. Maintaining an inventory of all radioactive materials and ensuring the quantity and form of radionuclides at the facility are as authorized by the license. Determining if activities are deemed to be unsafe to employees, the public or environment, or in violation of federal and applicable regulations and the radioactive materials license, as it pertains to radioactive materials or transport thereof and raising concerns to the appropriate individuals. Reviewing radiation surveys in unrestricted and restricted areas to determine that dose rates and amounts of contamination were at ALARA levels during the previous quarter. Initiating, recommending, or implementing appropriate corrective actions. Verifying the implementation of actions taken to correct radiation safety problems. Provide assistance to the corporate Health Physics Group as requested.

    Work Environment

    The work environment is onsite at the production and distribution environment within a radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. It is expected that the person in this role will spend a significant amount of time in the restricted area observing operations, training staff, responding to incidents, and in other ways implementing the radiation safety program. The facilities are operated under well-controlled and closely monitored conditions that are regulated by both state and federal agencies, and that are enforced by the corporate internal Quality and Regulatory groups. Each staff member will receive specific training in keeping radiation exposures within regulatory guidelines and will be routinely monitored for their exposure to radiation. Noise levels are considered low to moderate. Infrequent travel may be required.
