Radiation Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation-producing sources and imaging equipment and the protection of patients and staff from radiation. Calibrates all radiation therapy equipment, conducts X-ray machine performance surveys, and implements procedures to ensure quality control for electronic imaging devices. Being a Radiation Physicist recommends radiation safety procedures. Informs staff in radiation safety practices. Additionally, Radiation Physicist may require an advanced degree of radiation physics. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Radiation Physicist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Summary:
The Medical Physicist works closely with the radiation oncologists, director and department manager to ensure the highest standards of physics services. This includes, but is not limited to, the overview and quality control of all treatment calculations for treatment; consultation with radiation oncologists and other physician specialties concerning radiation therapy planning; supervision of, and consultation with, the physicists and dosimetrists on computer treatment planning and any associated dosimetry; determination of the radiation output of all radiation therapy treatment units, and all other duties as they relate to the operation of radiation within the Radiation Oncology departments. Additionally, each medical physicist leads a key area of radiation and supports the health system and strengthens the radiation department. The three key areas of radiation include: Education and Training, Technology and Planning and Radiation Safety.
