Museum Quality Assurance Specialist - Student Hourly
  • University of Kansas
  • Lawrence, KS FULL_TIME
  • Position Overview

Like the joy of discovery? Find satisfaction in mastering details? Do you love jigsaw puzzles? Yes? Then we want to work with you. Jump in with the KU Biodiversity Institute Specify Collections Consortium team (www.specifysoftware.org) and stalk our software bugs as part of our supportive and friendly group of museum scientists, software engineers, and undergraduate students. Software testing activities will take advantage of your need to find order, or disorder, on a small but vital part of the universe, and to build career-valuable expertise. You will learn modern museum data management practices and quality assurance methods working in a global organization with natural history museums around the world. No prior experience with our Specify museum software or technical coding skills needed. This is not a programming position (English, Business, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Studies, Communication majors, have all thrived in this position). We will boost you up to contribute to our mission to provide software for museums around the globe that document biodiversity-the world's plant and animal species. We have a comfortable space, and endless snacks, in Dyche Hall next to the Kansas Union on Jayhawk Boulevard.

Our student Specify team members have consistently raved about their experience working with us. If you are a creative, detail-oriented individual with an interest in how things work, you will find working with us to be fun and fulfilling. Our work scheduling is flexible, working around your class and break schedules.
Please note, we are NOT looking for computer science students for this position. We are looking for people who can think like a museum collection manager and are comfortable doing routine processes over and over to find the outliers.

    Job Description

    • Developing a familiarity with how natural history museums manage data, to attain an understanding of basic principles and methods of modern science data management.
    • Examining and troubleshooting software issues reported by users of Specify software.
    • Document found bugs with accuracy and lucidity in our bug repository and be able to clearly describe what freaky software situations you encounter.
    • Assist with special projects, specific user support tasks, and other duties as they arise. Pop into weekly staff meetings, describing your findings and surfacing issues as they arise for discussion.

    Required Qualifications

    • Undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Kansas, taking 6 or more credit hours.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills as evident in application materials and an informal interview.
    • Good working knowledge using a desktop or laptop computer.
    • Need to be available to work a minimum of 14 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters, and have the ability to commit to a weekly schedule (around coursework obligations) which can be flexible and be changed as needed, during the hours of 8 AM-5 PM, Monday through Friday. Planned vacations and breaks from campus are fine.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with spreadsheets or databases.
    • Detail-oriented work experience.
    • Enthusiasm for problem-solving and ability to apply new knowledge.
    • Ability to interact openly and communicate clearly with teammates, and the ability to prioritize, schedule, and complete tasks.
    • Ideally work in the summer half or full-time if not taking classes.

A complete application consists of the online application, cover letter, and resume. Only complete applications will be considered.
