The Manager of University Publications is an integral member of the editorial team, and is responsible for setting the editorial direction of the digital and print editions of University publications, such as the flagship CatholicU magazine - including the online version - and the annual report. The Manager of University Publications is responsible for the planning, writing, and editing of the publications, as well as collaborating on the production of video and podcast storytelling.
The Manager of University Publications will draw on a deep understanding of current print and digital publishing trends to develop a strategy in coordination with the Director of Content Strategy and the University Communications team to enhance the importance and depth of the University’s print and digital publications, as well as a vision for how print and digital approaches can work together to serve existing audiences and create bonds with new readers. They will organize and prioritize projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented and rapidly changing business environment.
In coordination with the Director of Content Strategy, set the editorial direction of digital and print University publications, such as the flagship CatholicU magazine and the annual report, to meet University objectives and goals. Lead the development of digital versions of established print publications, such as a newsletter for CatholicU Magazine, while coordinating in the creation and production of podcast and video storytelling. Serve in a consultatory role in the planning and production of publications that are created by other schools and divisions, such as the magazine of the School of Engineering. In coordination with campus stakeholders, including senior leadership, Advancement, Admissions, and Marketing, generate story ideas that meet stated business goals.
Lead the planning, writing, and editing of publications and reports of the Division of University Communications. Lead magazine meetings to discuss features, layouts, and artwork. Assign stories to staff members or freelance writers, manage deadlines, work with writers to identify angles and sources, coordinate artwork and graphic elements with the art director. Work with the art director for the layout and design of print publications; work with Marketing for the layout and design of digital publications. Manage the workflow of University publications, creating a list of each magazine’s feature, column, and department stories and other editorial. Proofread, edit, and rewrite articles to meet publication standards. Maintain the University’s style guidelines.
A Bachelor's Degree and eight (8) to ten (10) years of experience managing publications that support business goals.
Demonstrable skills and experience in the following areas:● Excellent written communication skills: Ability to express information effectively, and to create, compose, and edit written materials.● Exceptional knowledge of current digital and print publication trends.● Substantial experience using web content management systems (CMS).● Experience using Google Workspace applications, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Acrobat Pro.
● Proven ability to manage all aspects of production of high-quality creative publications. ● Excellent verbal, writing/editing, organizational and interpersonal skills. ● Experience implementing AP and/or Chicago Style.● Flexibility, ability to juggle multiple tasks; function well in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.● Computer literacy (proficiency in G-Suite, Microsoft Word, e-mail and Internet) a must. ● Experience with content-management applications.● Knowledge of the Catholic Church required. ● Organizational skills: Ability to organize work, coordinate with team members to accomplish goals, and ensure progress is made on assigned tasks.● Technology awareness: Knowledge of developments and new applications of Internet technologies.● Teamwork skills: Ability to work effectively in teams.● Experience managing a budget.
