    By joining our Department of Highways/District 6/Engineering Support Branch/Structures Section as a Transportation Bridge Inspector III in Kenton County, you will have the opportunity to perform bridge inspections on all types of structures throughout District 6.

    Holders of this Job Title will complete tasks such as:
    • Provides oversight and leadership of state crews performing safety inspections of bridges.
    • Prepare and review bridge inspection reports for technical accuracy.
    • Review bridge reports to identify maintenance repairs and replacement candidates.
    Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
    • Hands-on-experience inspecting various types of structures.
    • Structure repair common practices and procedures.
    • Familiarity with various Department of Highways policies and procedures.
    Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
    • Experience working around structures/bridges.
    • Working with the public and state and other government agencies.
    • Experience as a qualified team leader for bridge inspection.
    Will be exposed to risks inherent to bridge construction sites, including extreme temperatures, heights, and working in and over water which requires the following of safety procedures.

    Minimum Requirements
    EDUCATION: High School graduate.


    EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Nine years of bridge inspection experience as a National certified Bridge Inspector with four of those years performing Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) bridge inspections.


    Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Licensure as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors with four and half years of bridge inspection experience (four of those years as a National Certified Bridge Inspector) will substitute for the required experience and education. An Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited bachelor's degree in engineering with six years of bridge inspection experience (four of those years as a National Certified Bridge Inspector) will substitute for the required experience and education. An ABET accredited associate's degree in engineering technology with eight years of bridge inspection experience (four of those years as a National Certified Bridge Inspector) will substitute for the required experience and education.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course, FHWA Stream Stability and Scour Training Course, FHWA Nonredundant Steel Tension Member Training Course, FHWA Plan of Action for Scour Critical Bridges Training Course, and National Certified Bridge Inspector (Qualified Inspection Team Lead) Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
    Working Conditions
    Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to bridge construction sites, including extreme temperatures, heights, and working in and over water which may require the following of safety procedures.
    Probationary Period
    This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
