Transportation Mechanic

  • Primary Purpose:

    Perform mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Work on projects assigned following established procedures, substitute bus driving, and other general duties as assigned. This position may be full or part time.


    Qualifications:
    Education/Certification:
    ? High school diploma or GED
    ? Valid Arkansas commercial driver’s license
    ? Bus Driver training (may be completed after employment)


    Special Knowledge/Skills:
    ? Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision
    ? Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
    ? Ability to move & position/reposition heavy equipment and vehicle parts
    ? Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
    ? Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
    ? Acceptable driving record
    ? Ability to operate bus


    Experience:
    ? 3-5 years of engine mechanic preferred


    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    1. Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
    2. Perform mechanical repairs in a timely manner.
    3. Perform welding and minor bodywork.
    4. Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule to include: rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
    5. Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
    6. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed and maintain service records.
    7. Demonstrate process of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to mechanic helpers.
    8. Perform preventive maintenance; including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules.
    9. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.

    10. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
    11. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
    12. Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
    13. Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
    14. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed for maintenance.
    15. Work irregular hours as needed.
    16. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
    17. Maintain a clean and orderly shop area and fuel island; keep area free of tools and debris. 


    EQUIPMENT USED:
    Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment, school bus and district vehicles.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Constantly moves about district facilities and grounds; typically bends, stoops and crouches on a regular basis; frequently lifts, carries or otherwise positions/repositions heavy objects, equipment and supplies; ability to position self and perform work in various areas of the facility including elevated surfaces; variable working hours, on call 24hrs.
    Inside, outside, hot and cold conditions, also some conditions that may require safety equipment and protection, work around
    moving objects or vehicles; work on ladders and scaffolding, exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust
    fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel; slippery or uneven surfaces.
