TITLE: Transportation Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma required;
- Logistics specialty or transportation industry background strongly preferred;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in planning, scheduling, administration and management of a complex organization or department preferably allied with the field of transportation (Note: 2 years of satisfactory performance and evaluations for East Hartford Public Schools in another role with demonstrated public relations skills will be considered in lieu of the 5 years’ experience requirement)
- Managerial/supervisory level experience strongly preferred;
- Connecticut active Connecticut driver’s license and good driving record;
- Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office products;
- Strong communication and organization skills;
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
- Ability to work in a structured environment, understand and follow a chain of command;
- Ability to adapt to the needs of the school district as the Board of Education finds appropriate and acceptable; and
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Facilities Safety & Preparedness Manager
JOB GOAL: The Transportation Coordinator plans, organizes and coordinates the safe and efficient transportation of students through effective management of contracted service providers and ensuring the safe management of walking routes.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees and manages the East Hartford Public Schools (EHPS) student transportation system.
- Reviews and approves district-wide bus stop locations, in coordination with transportation providers intended to provide safe and efficient service to all students.
- Facilitates transportation requests in coordination with district personnel regarding field trips, athletic trips, and other special trips for EHPS students (e.g. teams, clubs, groups).
- Recruits, interviews, checks background and recommends employment of EHPS school crossing guards.
- Supervises a team of school crossing guards and substitute school crossing guards.
- Manages the training and professional development of school crossing guards.
- Reviews and approves bi-weekly payroll timesheets for school crossing guards.
- Evaluates all school crossing guards on an annual basis.
- Periodically checks the driving records of all bus company drivers and qualified EHPS staff.
- Maintains accurate licensing records of qualified EHPS student van drivers.
- Manages and maintains records of inspection, maintenance, and registration of the EHPS student transportation vans (STVs).
- Keeps records for reporting to the administration/Board of traffic accidents and other vehicle and/or student incidents.
- Interprets transportation procedures and regulations to public and staff.
- Stays abreast of all updates and changes to Connecticut laws, procedures, protocols, and best practices pertaining to student transportation.
- Plans, schedules and prepares documentation for transportation hearings with the Board.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings and other meetings upon request.
- Remains professional and courteous when addressing student transportation concerns or complaints of EHPS students, parents/guardians.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrates ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
- Demonstrates ability to work well with people.
- Demonstrates capacity to identify and propose reasonable solutions to transportation related matters.
- Coordinates all student transportation needs (both in and out of district) with contracted transportation providers.
- Develops proficiency with EHPS Student Information System (e.g., PowerSchool) with an ability to produce pertinent, timely routing information and development to transportation providers.
- Provides accurate information to transportation providers to develop efficient routing schedules and pick-up/drop-off times for students.
- Collaborates with the District Pupil Personnel Services department and outside agencies to coordinate adequate transportation for students with special/required needs.
- Other related duties that may be assigned by supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Seven hours per day, twelve-month year.
