Being a Psychologist - M.A. uses talk therapy to treat patient illness or distress, cannot prescribe medication. Requires a master's degree in clinical psychology. Additionally, Psychologist - M.A. requires a valid state license to practice. Typically reports to a medical director. The Psychologist - M.A. work is highly independent. May assume a team lead role for the work group. A specialist on complex technical and business matters. To be a Psychologist - M.A. typically requires 7+ years of related experience.   • Overview

    At the direction of the Behavioral Health Director, and in his/her absence, performs clinical assistance to behavioral health patients and their families. Patients may be self-referrals, referred from medical centers, or referred internally from the Clinic health professionals. Partners with psychiatric and allied teams, as well as Clinic health professionals, in the diagnosis, creation, and maintenance of the patient care plan. Works within the requirements of department programs, as well as applicable IHS Grants for Native Americans, and fulfills community health objectives as dictated by these programs and/or grants. 

    Responsibilities

    • Assists patients and/or patients’ families in understanding and accessing community resources to assist with barriers in areas, including, but not limited to, medical, behavioral health, education, and employment. • Provides counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy to patients and families within the requirements of department programs.• Prepares treatment plans and discharge plans and provides crisis intervention and emergency services as required.• Interprets psychiatric treatment plan and/or information to patient’s family; helps reduce fear and other attitudes which may obstruct acceptance of psychiatric care and continuation of treatment.• Works within the integrated clinic setting to assist with same-day and short-term support services.• Serves as a link between patient, psychiatric agency, and community.• Presents case information to Behavioral Health Director and other necessary members of the health care team regarding patient’s family and social background pertinent to diagnosis and treatment.• Provides and/or arranges for therapeutic interventions, as appropriate, for patients in a crisis condition and for patients with ongoing mental health problems.• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients (infant, adolescent, adult, or geriatric), including, but not limited to, biopsychosocial assessments, diagnoses using DSM-5 and ICD-10, and treatments within appropriate standards of care for outpatient behavioral health services.• Demonstrates knowledge of domestic violence, child, and dependent/elder abuse protocols.• Demonstrates adherence to and observance of all safety policies and procedures inclusive of infection control rules and regulations.• Maintains and adheres to confidentiality, including privileged communications (patient, employee, and company).• Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Must possess a current and unrestricted Clinical Psychologist license.• Psychologist license issued by an accredited and acceptable Board of California. • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a health care setting. • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. • Accuracy and attention to detail.• Ability to work independently and as a team member.• Possess a warm, caring attitude. • Experience and sensitivity in working with culturally diverse communities, including the ability to relate to and understand the special and specific needs of Native Americans.• Ability to assist a patient in distress. • Professional appearance and attitude. • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of the Clinic.

    • English-Spanish bilingual skills highly desirable. • Computer skills (MS Office Suite).  • Possession of a current valid CPR certification, or ability to attain certification within initial six (6) months of employment. • Willingness to receive continuing education training (some travel required).  • Native American preferred.
